It bugs me when I see people say that houses have no practical use. After all, this is a role-playing game, not a game of Pac-Man where you are trying to get the highest score. This is a grown up game rated "T" for teens and above.
A house is a place to gather, converse, talk about secret plans, harbor fugitives, and take your date after a few drinks at the local cantina.
Come on, people, do a little more than try to make credits or advance your skills, because when you reach the top, what is left? Are you going to go around starting fights with newbies to help your ego or give you something to do?
Houses should be a sign of status and they should be sold for higher values. Architects, I've done the math. Small houses should be selling for no less than 17k. It's only fair. If you calculate risk, time spent, resource costs (or the cost you could get on the open market for the resources), and a little extra for the fact that YOU CAN build a home, the number I gave is still a bargain.
How many surgeons charge $150 for an operation? That is more than enough to cover the cost of the electricity of the lights and machines used. Plus they make a little money on the side... Reaching an advanced profession like Architect should be like earning a Masters degree. It takes a lot of time and work to achieve and you'd expect to earn more for the "degree".
I've lost a single sale to a person that wanted a home. This person told me that people are selling homes for 10k. I told that person to go find those "people" that are selling for 10k and buy from them. I'm not going to break my back for a single sale. These "people" must have never experienced a critical failure on the final good before. Otherwise, they'd be out of business fast.
I'm trying to be a real businessman. Sure, I can cut a deal if you supply the resources. That's the bulk of my costs. But if you come to me with all the materials, I'll still charge you something for the house because I can make those materials into something that you cannot and I worked hard to get to this point. I don't care about leveling my skills. It is happening for me gradually. UXP, EXP, whatever. I'd rather not discuss them in the game. I just want to have some fun and role play. Yes, for friends, I may give them a VERY nice discount, but I've got a business to run.
I'm aware of your opposition, and I disagree

I agree, but the reality of the fact that many do sell for 10k or less forced me out of that branch of architect as my main job. You may charge 17k+ firm, but you likely won't sell too many, or at least enough to consistently maintain your harvesters and generators and later factories.
But anyway, back to your point about their use as a role play device, that's true, and I believe that as the Uber fighters max out, they will begin to pay more attention to their homes (Or even get one for the first time) as a place to display their uber-loot and gear.
And I'll still be around to sell them their furniture
