Is is possible to advance at a reasonable pace from Artisan (Eng IV) to novice architect without having to grind out hundreds of muzzles or whatever to generate the 33K XP? If you did it some other way, I'd love to hear how.

Well...I did Muzzles and Couplers...but feel free to also do Bone Armor. Bone Armor gives much more XP per item, but have fun killing 60,500 Gnorts for bone and hides.

Trust me...stick with Muzzles, its sooo easy, just takes awhile.

I did it with heavy axes. If I remember correctly you need around 400 of them, as opposed to 8000 weapon powerups. Takes a little more resources, but you can get that while offline -- the time consuming part is actually making the items (and deleting them, and fixing your 3x crafting tools when you accidentally fill up your inventory). As for the original question -- no I don't think there's a way to go it without grinding....and after that it seems to be nearly as bad.....55k to progress to first level in any tree.

er.....800 weapon powerups, not 8000....

There is no need to grind. I am a Master Artisan, Novice Tailor, Novice Armorcrafter and 1/3 of the way to Novice Architect. I sold everything. I never destroyed anything but mistakes and a few odd items that did not sell. I will likely be novice architect in about 3-4 days, if it even takes that long.

How did I do this? I watch the market and sell what no one else is sellilng, or I sell what is popular but at a lower price. I don't sell for peanuts, so if the price goes too low, I find something else to make. If necessary, I go to different towns or planets to find a good market. Of course, I take missions everywhere I go, so I end up making money that way, too. I buy hides and bone on the bazaar whenever I find them cheap. I make sure the stuff I sell is better than anyone else's or I don't try to sell in that niche.

So, that is 80,000 GCP, all from sales on the bazaar.

Grind versus non-grinding boils down to how much time you wish to take to advance. Those that want to skill up faster tend to grind, while those that want to take time to smell the roses do not. There isn't anything necessarily wrong with either approach -- it just depends how much of a rush you're in to get to the advanced skills.

If you don't want to grind then don't! Make the stuff you enjoy making and selling to people. Craft on demand when someone says they need something. Make friends with some new fighters to craftfresh weapons every day or two and make sure you keep them stocked with powerups to use. Give your items names so each one of them gives you that satisfying feeling. Trade crafting tools with another artisan every day or two so both of you get usage xp. Team up with a fellow artisan to make bone armor (it really helps ease the grind feeling when you make a set with a friend). Most of all, enjoy your character!

I agree with Garg. And if you have some friends ingame, let them provide the hide and bone for you! Bone armor is a nice break and yields wonderful xp!

I got myself up to Dom IV as well (need Master Artisan anyway really, as there's a couple items in there we use), and made Travel Packs. They give about 140XP a pop, and are popular sellers too, as they add to your inventory space.
