not sure if I should ask the crafters or the merchants themselves but I'm sure one of you folks will know

Are the merchant tents only able to be placed in cities or can I plop one out in the middle of no where?

I don't have a definite answer, but I'd guess u could place it anywhere, since you're able to declare it as a residence.

They can be placed anywhere except with the following restrictions:

1) You must be a merchant with the appropriate skill; they are NOT transferable to non-merchants

2) To be placed in a city, you must obtain zoning rights in order to setup shop.
