Thread: City ganking... Can you see it coming?

With the addition of player cities in the November(?) push, one has to wonder...

The Devs (GreenMarine maybe?) stated that there would be no private cities to promote building.

Picture if you will... A small group of players or a guild pools their resources to build a city. A larger group moves in to the citizenship zone and builds houses. One week later (next election), the original builders of the city lose it to squatters.

Any bets on how many hours it takes for the first gank?

There needs to be some approval process for people seeking citizenship in player cities, and it needs to be added with the cities, not as a knee-jerk reaction to the gank fest that will follow. Not that SOE has ever knee-jerked...

A menu like thehouse access list, with choices of Free/Voted/Closed for the city type would work fine. Start with Closed, move to Voted, then to Free as the city grows. Note, this would be only for accepting new citizens and nothing more.

yes, it's a concern... and possibly redeeding structures? raiding the town treasury?..

But though there are fewer city sites than there are PA's, private cities would mean monopolizing land.

I see a way a hall could also gank citizens... what if someone dropped a hall right by a bunch of existing houses and cranked the rent?

I hope they don't push this patch too soon but I've said that before...

les we forget even if a hal is droped in a spot of homes already there, the hall has to have a mayor voted in. and i doubt the guys that were there 1st will elect the ganker.

That would be more of a free City hall for them. I hope it happens to my pa, I would love a free city hall

No I think they mean the whole PA shows up - the hall and everyone in that guild with their houses. Each person who declares a residence in the area of the city hall gets a vote, so if I and my 4 friends get together and put a city hall down with our 5 houses, we get 5 votes. Whichever one of us takes politician is elected mayor by the other 4. Now someone moves their PA hall and their 30 guildmembers move their houses into the city. so that's 30 votes vs. the founder's 5. They can pick whoever they want as leader, and now all the city amenities and rules are theirs. Democracy in action.

Here's the problem, A city hall claims a sizeable fraction of the planet's surface, to allow a small group of players to control that area with no risk of being removed from power creates more potential for griefing than does your scenario. Besides, who is really the squatter? The large guild looking to find a place to build a city, or the small group that rushed to place a town hall before they were fully prepared to maintain control of it? I think this will happen, but I think it will be less a case of the large guild griefing and more a case of their being unable to find a spot of their own due to all the little groups that have gone out and ninja'd the best spots.

I kinda have to think that cities are supposed to be free to live in? (Aside from taxes of course).

It's only natural to assume that people will want the best sites for their cities, so that's where they will move. If you don't like that, your best bet will be to relocate your homes elsewhere and start over, or get more friends to come in and help take it back. They may add something for mayors to remove city structures if the case is happening alot, but I think that can be a griefing tactic in and of itself. *shrug*

IMHO the setup looks fine to me atm.

Ganking? That is what happens every single day in the real world.

The real world is worse, look at Calirforna, or even the last presidential election. Is that the kind og ganking you are trying to avoid? Good luck.

The problem is your perception, just becasue you start a town does not make it your town. Towns should not be private clubs. I am totally against what you are sugguesting. There is no garuntee that you get to run the town you start. Just like in the real world.

If I understand correctly, the 'city gankers' will be able to empty out the civic treasury, destroy the city hall and all the civic structures then, as a parting shot, leave a structures where the town hall and other civic structures used to be. And then... move on like locusts.

It is well known that some rebel/imperial PAs attract and cultivate griefers and exploiters and basically hold that griefing is acceptable behavior in the context of the GCW. I expect that they will band together to do exactly this to the opposite faction.

I have no idea if the devs have any idea how real this danger is.

I feel that player cities are definitely going to be a point of angst for a while....

The boards are going to change dramatically after the push...

Anyone who did that would be subject to banningunder the TOS. I know SOE doesn't publicize when they ban people (why I don't know, it would be an effective form of deterrent, but I imagine that someone's worried about legal issues), but they do ban people for violating the TOS. I expect that if this form of griefing is possible, and if it happens, that reaction will be pretty swift.

The word ganking cracks me up.

So when people vote in a new leader that is ganking. People have to get it out of their heads that Player Cities are like PA's that your select littel group owns, that is not at all case.

Poeple can move in our out as they pelase, they can vote as they please, the city has a life of its own.

No one ownds the city buildings, they belong to the city, not to the person that sets them down.

Will large PA's move into a town and take over... yes

Will peole be forect to move..... yes

Will people get upset over the takover of the local government....... yes

Will there be strife and conflict over this..... yes

Please tell me how this is NOT like Star Wars...... you cant, because it is like Star Wars.

This kind of upset and intrigue is exactly what this game needs.

Dayln, there are now two different issues here:

1) The political takeover of a city, in which I agree with you that you can't expect to maintain control of a city you create unless you have the political power to maintain that control.

2) The destruction of a city due to a temporary loss of political control. I don't even know if this is possible, but it's a separate issue from #1, and should be considered griefing if it is ever done.

I understand and sympathise with the people worried about losing a city they started to incoming voters. I come from Shadowbane and let me tell you, destruction of player-built cities was what the game was ALL about, and it created alot of stress. The most pwerful guilds' aim was to lay waste to the cities of their enemies, and it happened every single day.

With that said, and with the advanced notice we all have that voters can literally take the city away from those who establish them, let us go ahead into the realm of Player Star Wars Galaxies Cities with this mantra:

WE HAVE BEEN FORWARNED

If you plan on laying down the foundations of a new player city, you do so in complete knowledge that at any time, a rival group can come in and wrest its control from you. You are placing a resource that is not insureable. It's like playing the stock market in that your entire capital [capitol? Hahah!] is at risk, there are no guarantees whatsoever. Don't cry, don't whine, you knwe going in taht your structures, your town, your leadership wer expendable. There is no going back. Your only recourse is to go back there and vote in your own leadership again and evict whom you can.

I myself prefer to live out in the boonies. Enjoy StarWarsBane, hehe.
