I tried posting this in the GD forum but there were too many other posts and mine just got swept to the back pages. I figured I would throw it out here to see what people thought
I understand the need for the constant resource shifts and I think its a good idea. I understand why the devs don't really want to tell people exactly when a given resource will disappear. But why shouldn't the survey tool have a listing of how long a resource has existed? Right now the only way to keep track is if a player keeps a spreadsheet with every resource listed. While this works fine, its just a lot of work that most players don't want to bother with. Its not like the information on when a resource spawned was supposed to be secret, its just too much info for most people to keep track of by hand.
If there was just a listing of how long a resource had existed, you could weigh the benefit of placing a harvester much easier. If a resource has already been there for 5 days and you place a harvester, you are just begging to have that resource dissapear the next day. If you place a harvester on a resource that has spawned today, you can be reasonably sure that you will get a solid week of harvesting without having to move your equipment. Sometimes it would be worth it for you to place a harvester on an "old" resource just to squeeze as much out of it as possible, but you wouldn't really be able to complain when it goes away.
I think that this simple change would reduce the complaints about the resource shifting immensely. The only people who would be even tangentially hurt by this are the players who are currently keeping a spreadsheet, and even they would probably welcome the reduction in workload. This wouldn't add any overhead to the system because those ages are the same across the whole server. There isn't even a need to track hours, only the number of days since the resource spawned.
Look at it this way, if the age of a resource was currently listed in the survey tool, could anyone really come up with a good reason why that information should be taken away forcing people do keep track by hand? I doubt it.
