Thread: The Big Yellow Couch: Analysis and proposed solution.
Ok. I made one of these things several weeks ago, and a couple of us spent about five hours messing around with it. I just assumed that everyone else had done the same and it would be fixed quickly. This does not appear to be the case, so I post my findings so that my words may reach the ears of the Devs.
...and yes, I've /bugged this all and probably will again for good measure. ![]()
The problem with the big yellow couch is simple:
It's Z-axis is set too low in it's bounding box. Raise the couch a wee bit and the couch will be fine.
Ok. What happens is this.
There is a seperate issue where several pieces of the furniture is not completely targetable. Sofa Chairs, Yellow Scoop chairs, and almost any furniture with a textured surface is a good example of this. It's the TEXTURES themselves, not the furniture items themselves that is having the targeting problem. The ballot box is a seperate monster unrealated to this, I think. ![]()
I think this might possibly have something to do with video cards, or various video card texturing options enabled or disabled. I've not researched the texture thing in great depth, but someone with access to a few different brands of cards should. Regardless, the long and short of it is, some people can target them, some can't. If you are having trouble targeting the yellow couch, go throw down a sofa chair somewhere and see if the only time you can target it and get the radial menu is when your mouse is over the flat white base texture at the bottom. When your mouse goes over the pretty cloth texture, the reticle vanishes, and you're unable to target it. This is annoying, but perfectly livable given all of the other problems we have in Architect at the moment. Once targeted, it DOES work.
Now back to the couch.
The problem with the couch is that thebounding box (the invisible box that lets the system know how to stack your clothing right) that the couch occupies has the couch set too low within it. When you drop the couch onto the floor, the bottom sinks into the ground, and is therefore untargetable. Every single yellow couch you have EVER seen is sunk about 4-6 inches into the ground. Starports, cantinas, houses, trade halls, everything. Player or SOE placed, it dosen't matter.
You cansee this for yourself by placing a yellow couch in a medium tatooine house, or other similar area with a sunken floor, like a pa hall. If youdrop itwithin the room (crossing room boundariesis another issue) but NOT in the sunken floor, and SO thatpart of the couch is IN the sunken area, you willsee exactly what I'm talking about. What we think of as the regular bottom of the couch is actually about 4-6 inches up, completly sinking the targetable white part into the floor, making it untargetable by people that are having difficulty with the afforementioned texture problem. *phew*
We actually had some similar problems when player created furniture came out forThe Simsa while back.
Anyway, what this means to you as a player.
Probably not that much. But IF you can't target them, you should be able to place them in a sunken area with relative safety, provided you drop them safely on the ledge first. Even then you should be able to get someone else who CAN target it to move it around for you. I do not know if other players and pick it up for you after last weeks house admin patch. I will test that this afternoon now that I think about it, unless somebody wants to test it themselves, and reply to this which would be nice.
More importantly, this should be a relatively simple fix that should not affect anything else in the game. (Hopefully, who knows!)All we need is a patch that replaces the object in game with a new one raised up a wee bit. Then all the couches will pop-up just a little bit like mushrooms, and all will be well. Well, better. There's still the texture targeting thing. Probably something for the next big patch maybe.Dunno nothing about that, not my problem.
Harumph. I told them I should've beenin onbeta. ![]()
Now then...how to get the Dev's attention....
That makes complete sense. I think your on to something. I never see the white area on the bottom of that couch, but if its there...your right, it would be just like targeting the sofa chair. Although Im afraid to try it, I have had 2 of thesecouches stuck in my house, and took CSR's two weeks each time to come and remove it.

I had one stuck in my house too. After giving up and building myself a bigger house, I learned the secret of using the yellow couches.
/pickup couch
It works unless you changed the name while crafting it. If it was Yellow Couch I believe the syntax would be
/pickup yellow_couch
I hope that helps you until this problem is fixed.

OK. I have a dumb question.. WHAT yellow couch? We can make the crappy low end reddish orange thing, the small blue and black couch, the large red couch and the master architect couch.
Loveseats we can make the reddish futon thing, the pink barcalounger thing, the crappy reddish orange newbie thing and the master architect one.
None of these are yellow. And i have not had any issues dropping any of these. So what big yellow couch are we talking about here? Did i somehow skip one somewhere? I would like to think that having reached master architect i might know which one you are talking about, but sadly that does not seem to be the case.
It's the couch we get at Furn lvl 3 I believe
Thanks for the tips I have been trying to figure out how to pick up and more that thing around for weeks lol

I will have to go play with this. I've used it on things I already had targeted, like when I launch a gun or fish into the walls or into my staircase. I did not know it would work on things not targeted! ![]()
If it works, that is gonna be really, really handy! ![]()
Wait, what am I thinking? I knew that. Doh! ![]()
But it didn't work on my couch... well, that was weeks ago. I was probably doing something wrong.
Yes, that oughta work fine.
If you can not pick up or target one of these couches logout of the game. Now start up and go to options. Click on the graphics tab at the top and look for the drop menu for pixel shader. Change this to optimal. Now log into the game and play with your newly freed couches.
If you ever go into options again reset the optimal setting, otherwise you will be reset to disabled... **even if you change nothing**
Nice simple and it works.. all the devs have to do is make it so this setting either doesn't kill the couches or they can just make it so the game doesn't default you back to disabled any time you are so foolish as to want to change a setting.
I sent a email to a csr about this (the bane of his existance as he calls it) thinking they will get results from the devs quicker than a couple /bug reports lost in a see of others will. I know the csrs want this fixed as they are spending alot of time dealing with this right now.
There yah go, yah'll owe me a Jawa beer.
