I tried to make a crafting station las night. It listed it needed 2 sensor suites, 2 control units and 5 storage. So i added em and failed....couldnt afford to try again that night.
I've read they are OPTIONAL? Is this true and if so how do they affect the station?
Thanks

Optional subcomponents:
A station without the optional subcomponents has a functionality range of -15 to +15.
By adding the optional subcomponents, you increase the range that functionality can go(in both directions). It is expected that the maximum(and practically impossible) is -50 to +50.
In addition to this, the quality of the subcomponents helps determine the functional value of the station. A subcomponent at 50% experimentation has little to no effect on the functional value, while being higher than 50% gives a higher functional value, and lower than 50% gives a lower functional value.
So, it is entirely possible that if you make a station using low or non-experimented subcomponents, you will end up with a station with very bad functionality. I did this on purpose once, and got a station with a -43 functionality, but all parts were not bottomed out.
But yes, the extra parts ARE OPTIONAL.

I think it is more along the lines of -45 to +45. Read the third post in this thread for my reasoning why:
