If the error message you get is something like "you can't place that here" then you're inside a no-build zone and need to move farther away from the city.
If you get the placement screen but never get a green light, odds are that the ground isn't flat enough. Factories & harvesters aren't as forgiving as houses when it comes to the terrain.

Factories and harvestors both require land which is *much* flatter than what is required for house placement. A house that was across the "street" from my shop went poof right around the time I was placing some factories. The house was at the top of a hill, an area that appeared to be almost flat to the eye. To the game, however, the land was mostly a gentle slope and was therefore unsuitable for factory placement. There was one tiny flat spot near the crest of the hill. It was the just the perfect size for a single factory. It was one of just two flat spots within 100 meters of my shop. I now have factories on both of them.

Hi,
Wasn't sure which forum to ask so since Architects make 'em--I'll ask you:
I have been having trouble placing factories and I have come to the hypothesis that the only thing it could be for these particular spots (around the Lake Retreat) is that factories have to have completely level ground to be on -- is this true? Or can someone guess what another reason might be (I know about lairs, and proximity to toehr structures and basic stuff.)
Thanks in advance,
