I'm sure this has been tried, but can you put a backpack inside another backpack, thereby increasingthe total # of items you can carry? I'd try it myself, but I'm currently at work (shhh, don't tell my boss!).

No, you can't. And even if you could, the items in the second backpack would count against the capacity of the first backpack so you wouldn't see a benefit.

In fact, you'd be wasting an inventory slot by having an otherwise useless backpack in your backpack.

You can, however, put cargo pockets and satchels in them.

They still take up a slot but they let you organize things better.
