Thread: I want a vendor!

I am working at becoming a novice architect and would like to be able to sell some things at my own vendor. I am maxed out on surveying and crafting in the artisan profession but have not bothered to do much with the other two tracks within artisan. However, it looks like one of the early "benefits" of the business track is being able to place vendors in your own buildings. As far as I can tell I won't actually be able to even create a building that I can actually walk into until I become a novice architect. Why would I want to get a skill that I won’t even be able to use for four levels?

Am I missing something here?

Another issue is that I seem to only run into vendors once in a while – it is quite random. Are people actually making money on these?

I also have tons of ore and steel that I would like to sell in bulk and not be limited to 3000 credits at the bazaar.

I can answer those questions of yours I had similar concerns.

Yes, you CAN use vendors, but you'll have to buy a house from someone if you cannot make one yet.

Yes, people make tons of money from vendors. I have. However, there may (or may not) be a bug with them. Droid and Vending Machines have outrageous maintenance costs while the NPC vendors are dirt cheap to upkeep. You won't be able to get an NPC until you get to merchant (if I recall correctly) so by keeping cheap items in your first vendor until you have enough exp for merchant is advisable. The higher the prices are of items in your vendor the more upkeep you pay.

I'm not sure about the limit on prices in a vendor. I've got things in mine for 95k right now, so obviously it won't be a problem for someone like you yet

I didn't realize the prices of things changed the upkeep you pay. No wonder it used to say 10 days and went to 10 hours after I put something up for 40k.

Thanks for posting that. Seems odd they, why does price affect the upkeep?

There is no limit on vendors that I know of. I have items in my vendor selling at 1mil credits.

"Yes, you CAN use vendors, but you'll have to buy a house from someone if you cannot make one yet."

It seems rather odd then that you would get an ability so early in the game that requires another much more advanced abilty (or a ton of money) to use.

Do you advertise primarily here? I really don't want to spend my time runnning through cities yelling out my spam to people who have no interest in what I am selling. It would be nice to have some sort of "yellow pages" feature where eeryone could advertise their shops...

People can advertise their shops, but it requires skill in the Merchant profession. Business 3 only gives you the very basic vendor, no extras, sort of the way you get bone armor in the engineering line, but nothing better.

Well, not every business person wants to be an architect. Every other advanced crafter must buy a house. Plus, the vendor at business 3 also allows aspiring merchants to start renting out or using their skills earlier. Interdependence is the name of the game

Well, if people can "advertise their shops" somehow I have yet to see it. This leads me to believe that whatever mechanism is in place to "advertise" is pretty crappy.

Of course we all depend on each other, and of course not every business person wants to be an architect. My problem is not with the interdependence, but rather the fact that a businessman is given a skill at level II that realistically (unless I am way off here) he will not be able to take advantage of - given the price for houses and vendor maintenance - until he acquires at LEAST a few more levels of skill.

Maybe I'm way off here as I am concentrating on architecture rather than business, but that particular skill just seems a bit out of place to me.
