I didn't realise that the 'Ongoing new structure ideas' thread was as dead as it appears to be
So I am bringing this back into this thread for an airing.
I have not seen this idea put forward before, so I apologise in advance if it has already been suggested.
I am not sure how well this idea would go down, but it occurs to me that crafters may benefit from a new factory model. What I am thinking of is something more along the lines of a production line based manufacturing plant.
I have not thought through all the possible requirements or difficulties, but here is the basic idea, maybe it can be fleshed out a bit with further suggestion.
Manufacturing Plant:
- has multiple ingredient hoppers each of which can take it's own schematic (perhaps the number of input hoppers is dependant upon number of components used when making the plant, or perhaps it should be an experiment line?), these would be used to make sub-components.
- Has a 'Final Combine' hopper, in which the components made earlier in the process are combined with the resources needed for the final combine to make the finished item.
- when making the plant it should be possible to experiment for efficiency, i.e. faster production.
- and for hopper size
Unresolved issues:
- The biggest question is: how to handle the experimentation for the final combine for those items (e.g. Harvesters) where this is crucial ? Should the plant be switched on the sub components sufficient for 1 final combine be run and then experimentation carried out in the final combine hopper? - Any suggestions?
- Should you be able to remove subcomponents during the process, or only after the full run has finished (I guess the former, which would require you to switch off first)
- How many lots would it take? Should this depend upon how many hoppers?
- What is the limitation for run time, I would suggest that as enough of the sub components for a final combine drop into the final combine ingredient hopper then the final combine takes place.
As you can see the idea would be to have a one step production line going from raw resources through to final product rather than producing each sub component individually through a factory run and then gathering these all together to put through a factory for the final combine. A massive time saver for crafters, especially Architects.
Please add your thoughts and suggestions if you think this would be a good structure

I'm all for it. I don't make HQ crafting stations because they're just too hard to keep all the parts around for, in my opinion.
However, I've gotten the impression the Devs did not expect to see the large scale production and manufacturing that some players have managed to pull off. In light of that, I don't expect them to take one step closer to making crafting any easier, at least until lot swapping is more under conrol, if ever.
