Here is an aditional Idea for storage..,
How about the Chests and dressers we ARch's make actually be able to store stuff (perhaps MAINTENANCE could be charged on the chests/dressers).
In addition, Make it so that certian pieces of furnitaure store specific types of items.
For expamle,
Dressers (for bed rooms) Just store clothing.
Tool Chests only store tools (ie survey tools, crafting tools, slicing tools...etc)
Chest's Store general items (ore and stuff)
Weapons lockers (for well...weapons)
Have 1 for food stuffs (not sure which one it would be)
etc..
I would be happy to pay a little (very little) maintenance on some functional storage items that were appropriate for their type.
Here is an even better idea for a maintence fee on them,
You have a variable for the the current number of items in a house correct? Lets call this variable X.
Make up some kind of fee, I think 1-2 cr would be acceptable per item per day. Variable Y.
Let's say your house cost per 30 minute period is variable Z.
And your Final cost per 30 minute maintenance period would be F
So the equation would be F=((X*Y)/48)+Z
Ok, lets give the example some meat:
Lets say X=150 (average medium house fare)
Y=2
Z=35 (I don't know exactly what it is but it seems about right for a medium house)
Then,
F=((150*2)/48) + 35
Or
F=(300/48) +35 ....F=6.25+35 ....F = 41.25 ...or round to F=41 credits maintenance per 30 minutes.
Now as you have already stated: Stuff inside containers is easier on the DB than stuff on the floor....
People will start putting all that junk/ore/weapons laying around their houses in Furniture , You will have created an additional (small) money sink, and People can control how much maintenance their house costs by deciding how much stuff is in their house.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
