I've been playing since launch week over a year ago, and what little crafting I'd done in that time was a real grind. A medic tree here, a scout tree there, I never looked forward to it. It was all the same. so after having an alt (and later giving it away), I found I was kind of bored again. I hope I never have something as passive as television as a primary way to kill time, pass time, enjoy time (that ended years ago, and it's usually background noise now) so what's next? It left the problem of boredom in the game, and gaming, short of solving it by trying a brand new game anyway.
Then on Monday, I had this really strange urge. "I want to be an architect." It wouldn't go away. All day, I just thought about making furniture and candles, and buildings. Garva's Galactic Home Show didn't help, it just made me want to make things more. After work, I checked out all the stores in a nearby mall that might carry SWG, but they were all sold out. I didn't feel like going to another mall, so I just went home. The next day however, I did buy it. So now I'm on the road and should be Master by the weekend. I spent about a million creds for resources (fortunately, I sold some adhesive for a million earlier in the week), and am at 0/1/0/0. I can't wait to get home and get thousands of XP just to make one Gungan Head Statue, especially after only getting a couple of hundred for any crafting I've ever done in the game to this point.
I hear that it's hard to make a living as an architect, being pretty much the antithesis of armorsmith, living in obscurity and maybe even poverty. But it's all in the crafting, it's about making things - it's doing it for yourself. That, and the far more creative process of interior design, I'm definitely looking forward to this profession (it'll be my eighth master over three accounts), and it's sure to be at least interesting. Learning is sometimes scary, but I do look forward to using factories and to some degree schematics, if not the falling down parts along the way.
Anyone want a free Gungan Head Statue?

Welcome.
I'd recommend reading through the FAQ if you haven't yet. It should answer a lot of the initial questions you might have.

Be prepared to keep pretending......
We don't actually design anything, only build pre-designed schematics.
Sosome more appropriate titles for this profession would be:
GeneralContractor, Builder, Construction Worker, Infrastructure Assembler...
Anyone else got any synonyms (sp?) for this profession, eh?
Cheers

i understand.. i guess it'll be the novelty i'll enjoy at least for a bit. i thought designing a shelf would be a little more interesting than a glop grenade.
what you said reminds me of a quote i just read today as a matter of fact.
"A man who works with his hands is a laborer, a man who works with
his hands and his brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his
hands and his brain and his heart is an artist." - Louis Nizer

No, actually I've made my multi-millions being a custom-named furniture whore, Interior Designer and resource monger.
I never had the desire to be a Real Estate Broker (harvesters, housing or factories) due to the cut throat nature that we face in this regard.
And while I haven't "designed" anything as grandious or pleasing as your bank, foosball table, etc. (they are quite nice though, kudos), I for a time enjoyed my Interior Design business and it's unique challange of meeting the clients personal needs.
It's just I've become VERY jaded of late with this game and after stress testing WoW (and watching the new OT DVD's), I realize that this game has fallen TERRIBLY short of it's potential.
And the players are NOT to blame. The Dev's have me baffled with they're actions. I'll rant no more.
I am sorry if my poor attitude as become infectious.

I almost skipped this post. I thought it was going to be another person complaining about what they can't doas an architect, and how it we only pretend to make things. Turns out I was wrong at first, but also sadly right.

Welcome, and thanks for proving me wrong. I think you'll be happy with your choice, and will find yourself happily creating new and exciting things. I can't wait to see what you make.

And this is what I was afraid the original post was about, and the reason I almost skipped it.
We don't design anything? Speak for yourself. I just got done designing a foosball table. Before that, a safety deposit vault and a movie theater. Not to mention many other smaller uniquethings. Take a look at the Homeshow some week. You'll see things people designed themselves every week. With a bit of creativity you can design any number of things.
I'm guessing you make a lot of money selling harvestors and such though.
Don't let him get you down Freebi. There's plenty of fun to be had.

What's to pretend ?
Anybody can master Architect in a VERY short time. Architect must be the fastest profession to master (if you have some ore and gems)........craft away...
Hard to make a living...hahahah....
Eveything you pull from the ground cost you .5 (point 5) cpu. Everything you sell is 3 - 10 cpu....or more...
Realistically, everything an Architect sells is sold at a profit.
Want to make more money? The ARCHITECT WITH THE MOST LOTS WINS......
Regardless if you have 200 cross server static lots, rented 10 from your friends on your server, or you are a SOLO Architect only using you 10 lots, as long as you have a vendor and fill it...you'll get a slice of the pie too.

It's all about playing the way you want to play. Interior design does nada for me, but I get akick out of making my own harvs/crafting stations/factories/homes, etc.....and for friends, whoever else needs. If I get rich, great, if I don't great, I'm still having fun and thats all that matters. It soundsl ike you really like to play the game, so you'll enjoy it, where some wouldn't at all. Best of luck with it. (I'd even suggest not grinding up with statues, but rather make each item in the treeas you learn it, then use statues as a supplement. Took longer but I enjoyed it more andthink I learned a few things along the way, such as what I really did like to craft.)

*Update* wewt
Thanks a lot for all your great replies, I'm actually having more fun now than boring ol' the shoot 'n loot game (well, I still do that because I love finding crystals).
I bought my way to master ($ + Gungan Heads + 2 days = M.Arch. - who was complaining about the 35:1 xp:fxp ratio? hehe), It costed well over 1M, and probably approaches 2M with all the training and other startup costs, like building 2 medium houses and a factory. One house is the shop, and the other the store/showroom, though I'll probably just stick my 2nd vendor in a mall or tent somewhere (building up merchant atm, 2 vendors so far). Aside from crafting all the furniture to decorate, the countless shuttles back and forth to a bulk dealer cos I keep forgetting stuff - that archi calculator excel sheet is great, now that I've found it, finding an annoying crafting mouse droid (please shoot me or the droid), I've actually put architect stuff in the vendor now, a couple of wind generators and small houses.
Last night was my first real factory run of structure modules (220 of them), and I may do one of 20something wall modules depending how I feel. When I'm done, I'll have made one of every type of house usable on Naboo (home planet plug, city Antares / Naboo / Intrepid). I guess I should make some furniture to fill the vendor a little more, basically one of everything, plus extras for stuff that sells better. I don't know how long it'll be before I can get onto the planetary map, but I want to be ready. Meanwhile I'll just be working for the city basically I guess.
I'm hoping a workaround of that bug I read about of lights expiring while on the vendor can be fixed by selling bundles of assorted lights in a satchel or cheapy container, and this morning I was trying to think of what complimentary items I could sell on the bazaar to promote business. If lights expire on the bazaar and vendors, that may not work, but then shouldn't flyers be disposable? Hey, it's free! Well, 20cr anyway.
Anyhoo, thanks again, and I'll be around.

I became an architect for two reasons. Build my own harvesters (OK, I'm cheap, all right?), and make the absolute best crafting stations that I could make. Harvesters were pretty easy, just follow the instructions given by the knowledgeable people in this forum, and happen across some good resources for the little bit of crafting that needs experimentation and good resources. The crafting stations (now at about 43.6) have taken me about a year to accomplish, because they are complex little buggers, requiring high stat resources for everything. The polymer that I needed just spawned a few weeks ago on my server. In between times, I have made money by selling some items on the bazaar (my vendor is in a really lousy place, and I refuse to move. Yes, I'm too stubborn for my own good).
So whatever you do as an architect, do it for the fun of doing it. Try to maintain a source of income, do a little bit of merchandise grinding, but for the rest, just make what you want to make.
