Thread: Should Houses decay? No way...read why I think so inside

Ok, here's the deal. Weapons and armor eventually do decay in real life with TONS of use. They just do. Same with clothes...wear clothes enough, and they are eventually just going to get thread bare. But, houses...ok, there are houses being lived in in real life that are over 200 years old. As long as you keep up good maintenance on the house (just like the people who pay maint fees on houses in SWG), it won't turn to crap. I don't care if it hurts us if houses don't decay. This game is closer to real life than any other game I've ever played. That's one thing I LOVE about these types of games. I want games to take the next step toward realism...all the time.

So, clothes, weapons, and armor should all decay. Houses should not...no matter what it does to our economy as archs. Now,extractors, power plants, and furniture...that's a different story...those should decay with time.

houses shouldnt decay because i pay upkeep on them to keep them up and functioning. I wont drop 350k on another guild hall if decay is put on houses. I wont spend 2k more on another shirt if its put on clothing. Ill be homeless and ill run around naked before ill buy something that is simply not going to last.

I posted this on another string but it seems like it belongs here instead.

Whatif every time a structure needs to be repaired it simply increases the maintenance rate for that structure. So if the structure drops to 75% for lack of maint. the maint rate increases by 2.5% or .25% or somthing along that line. This wouldn't cause structures to decay, but it would eventually cause a structure to be replaced for one that costs less to maintian. It would take a while for the effects to be noticeable, but it would slowly degenerate the effectivenessthat structure. Eventutaly it takes more and more duct tape to keep the thing running.

Ok...some points were made...

1. Yes my friend..houses to decay in real life...why do you think you see piece of crap housing in what some like to call "the ghetto"...do you think they were made that way?

2. PA Halls should decay...but should take like...6months - 1yr in real life to fully decay.

It took my guild 2 days to make the money for it...

10 people...make them pay 20k a piece...thats like..2 - 3 hours worth of work. not alot to ask for when its something like this.

#1 My house is decaying.

#2 I dont care about real life at all, it makes game sense for items including houses to decay.

#3 But #2 is still beside the point, my house is indeed decaying. in real life

#4 Good night all, have a great weekend!!

This is an ever evolving part of my very long idea post every week .... current iteration as of 09-05-03

This system while complex would make houses more attractive to players while allowing us some repeat business ... please note that I would remove construction and furniture from this profession and rename Architect to either Structural Engineer or Architectural Engineer.

Residential - No decay, maintenance at normal, redeed at normal.(limit one vendor and cannot do any advertising on planetary map.) while we will have a more limited market for residential structures players would be more willing to buy them.

Commercial - No decay, Set function time period(modifiable by experimentation), redeed at normal. can be refreshed by placing a new deed into the management terminal. (Redeeding does not reset the function time limit.)(Can use advertising provided you have the proper skill. Vendor limit based on skill) (I would suggest changing the way venders charge maintenance as alot of people are not wanting to go this route.)

Industrial - Redeed decay percentage(modifiable by experimentation), maintenance at normal. redeed at normal. (Factories would be fine unless you for some reason moved them around alot but harvestors which everybody has to move once a week would provide us with more business.)

Military - No decay, Can be damaged/destroyed by enemy PAs/factions. Can be repaired by placing resources in the structure management terminal. redeed uses factions points instead of credits. maintenance uses faction points instead of credits. (This would probably be our best source of income as they add functionality to the galactic civil war. (experimentation can improve the damage resistance, overall hitpoints as well as the improve the speed of automated defenses.)

This is the first step to creating a viable profession that will remain viable.

That's fine about houses, but factories and harvesting machines do decay and break down. I'm more interested in getting those to eventually wear out because at least they are used to make money.

I'm more interested in getting our experimentation values to actually do something like lower maintence or increase effiency. At the moment our only means of competition is pricing and stock on hand if we could compete on quality as the other artisians do I think it would stop alot of the price wars between architects.

You're right, houses dont decay very fast (but they DO decay).

But then by this line of reasoning WHY ARE WE ALLOWED TO MOVE HOUSES??

So to follow through with your line of thought, just make it so houses cannot be moved. You would have to sell them and move out.
