(Ok, usually I have my best ideas in the shower, but this one came to me while my cat was trying to wake me up for morning feedin, so I was in that half-dream/half-awake state whereyou get some really cool stuff dreged out of the old id. I've polished it in my head all day, and it still seems like a good idea, so here goes.)
PROPOSAL:
We all know that when we get Z axis in the next few weeks, things are gonna go nuts with decorating.
We can do insanely creative stuff with what we have already, who knows what we're going to be able to make. No one, no one, could've anticipated us building Fishtanks, Fireplaces, Pod Racers, and a Carousel out of the stuff in game already. I'm sure the developers planned for decorative stuff to be used creatively, and looking around some of the decorated homes in the static cities, we can see that they themselves had some pretty clever ideas. On the other hand... Carousel.
Since no one, not even us players, can tell what the heck we're going to be able to do with decorating...
Let's blow this decorating thing WIDE open and give us a set of craftable simple geometric shapes.
Their sole purposewould befor decorating.
This would be like a kit (like building blocks) under furniture skills.
Their purpose? Simply to make more complex shapes.
Or if you want a house of full ofboxes, whatever.
A set of simple geometric shapes is all that would be needed. Some spheres, blocks, beams, cones, boards, maybesome cylinders, and a torus, let's go nuts. This would both reduce polygon count (not a big deal since it's all going to be in player houses) and limit development time, since the time needed to make the art would (hopefully) be insanely short. Throw on a stock white or gray texture, since we're getting colors eventually anyway, and voilla. A set of tools that would let the players push the boundaries of player created content to the fullest. At a relatively cheap development price too, I imagine. Heck, you could start including a new shape every patch or so to ensure we Architects had something to look forward too.
Nothing fancy. Let me stress that.
The fancier the object, the more development time it takes for the art, and it limits it's versitiliy to us, the players.
....cause we need a white sphere that dosen't cost 6 million credits.
I'm off to go try and model a double Helix in a medium tat.
Thoughts, comments?
