Hi,
my Main, Shubashi at Gorath, is one of the oldest Master Architects and Master Merchants on Gorath, playing since the first Week of release and playing those Professions since then (not at master from the beginning, of course).
At the end of last Year, shortly before they changed the Harvesters, I decided to focus on my Merchant instead of being an Architect and started to sell Armor and Weapons for other Crafters who dont want to skill Merchant.
I had all type of deals, paying first or pay after selling, Renting a vendor and stuff like that since then. I always fought for the Architect Profession to gain some business, as well as for the Merchant profession to get some changes, especially bugfixes.
However, being a crafter in SWG means to get no love from the Devs. The only real Change was for Chefs, BEs and DEs, and those changes were unbalanced, like the announced Merchant-Change will be, but in the opposite way.
However, my decision, and those of some other Players I know, has been made: I will cancel my accounts if this goes live.
I will not reskill my char after I hoped for a positive change that long. I will simply cancel and look for something else, cause this is the only way a customer can react to a decision he dont likes and which makes a product unattractive to him.
There are a lot of things which need changes, like decay for Harvesters, prevent Cross-Server Lot-Trades, Bugfix Merchant-Issues like Vendors which act as Item-Storage and stuff like that. There are a lot of good ideas floating around (of course, mine are the best ones, but I stoped posting them cause it doesnt help :-) ).
The decision for a Player-Based economy in a game always means that you have to be very carefull, so the economy does not get out of balance and that no single person or guild is able to dominate the market. But SOE did not even manage to remove Items that were buged due to their own convert-programm or which were exploited from the game. They also showed no passion for the Economic balance in the game at all, which lead to ridicolous situations on some or all servers, at least the big ones are way out of balance.
A long awaited Fix for the Merchant Profession (which is NOT a Profession designed to make a single crafter happy, it is not the ELITE-Crafting profession, its a standalone Profession)turns out to be the biggest Nerf in SWG-History, and thats said by a CM and CH :-)
For me, there is no alternative, this is like a Dentist using a Chainsaw to work in the patients mouth. I will not go to such a dentist :-)

I'm already working on mastering merchant with my alt, hopefully will have the master title tonight
Currently I do mostly harvesters, factories, houses and high end crafting stations;I stock some furniture, but not much; I stock some of the lower level tailor-loot items, and I've recently branched into Artisan items (speeders, repair tools, batteries, weapon powerups) to take over for a guildmate who dropped crafting (realized all the effortof his inventory was too much like work and was no longer fun).
If this goes live, I will probably re-evaluate my business, and focus more on my specialties, dropping the furniture (except for custom orders), tailor items, and maybe the artisan vendor in favor of the installations and buildings. As neither the WSnor AS in my guild have merchant, I might offer to do resale for them.

1) Will you pick up merchant?
I am currently 4/4/0/4 Merchant. Had it Mastered and dropped one branch because I really didn't care if I could customize my vendors. I may remaster it with the latest proposed changes. Which would make me Master Architect, Master Artisan, Master Merchant.
1a) will you have enough with the item limits to hold your viable business.. ?
I have anywhere from 1500-1800 total items on my vendors as my perpetual stock targets. There is at least 1 of everything an architect can make on them at all times. I will be fine with the current change proposal and actually probably will be happier with the increase in total vendors so that I can further specialize the names of the vendors making it easier for people to find what they are after via the planetary map registration.
2) will you find a merchant to sell your stuff?
Not necessary for me, but if I were to give up my Merchant skills I would definately seek a merchant to sell my wares for me. I expect I will buy up wares for younger architects comming up the ranks as well. I would consider any offer on my vendor that it for less than what I sell it for. Re-selling items is a no muss no fuss thing. I don't have to go craft them and if I only make a couple of K profit it's fine with me.
3) will you give your items to that merchant and have them pay you as they sell... ?
I'd have to know the individual REALLY well to do that.
4) Will you make the merchant pay you first?
Of course. The way the system is set up right now would be a tremendous hassle for someone to put things up for sale on consignment. If they are a full service merchant keeping track of who sold what and when would be an endless job.
I am rather happy at the proposed changes as of right now. The only things I would like to see them tackle now would be item categorization and the subcategories on the vendors, and the vendor registration on the planetary map process. We all know that some of the sub-categories on the bazaar and vendors are unused and never are going to get used. They need to make the items easier to be searched for. I also think that you shouldn't be able to regiseter your vendor under a certain category type. I think the server should scan the items on your vendor and categorize it accordingly. I'm really pleased that empty vendors will fall off the registration. It is tiring looking for something only to go through a ton of empty vendors that haven't been used in ages.
If none of these questions fit for what you are planning on doing what will you be doing?
Ok .. Please No flames.. just simple answers... thanks ... and be as kandid as you can be....

Already have merchant (several in fact)
1a) will you have enough with the item limits to hold your viable business.. ?
Will have plenty since I'll be able to have more actual vendors as well
2) will you find a merchant to sell your stuff?
nope, don't need to
3) will you give your items to that merchant and have them pay you as they sell... ?
I actually provide merchant services to my guild crafters, they give me the merchandise and I pay them as things sell and keep a 15 to 25% stocking fee from the proceeds.
4) Will you make the merchant pay you first?
I do not pay for the items i sell for them, they give me the stock and then I pay them a couple times a week depending on how quickly their items sell

Already a Master Merchant and Master Architect.

With the new limits I will still have room to store all my inventory, how ever I will stop
breaking up resources into 10 and 20K lots, my smallest will be 50K. That will hurt
The smaller guys who can't spend 200K in one shot. I am sure my sales will slow
down, but that is not a big deal my bank account can take it and eventualy they will
buy it. But that in turn will probably contribute to inflation, but then again that doesn't
matter if I never sold another thing I could still play the game.

4) Will you make the merchant pay you first?
I would never take a consignment sale

If they keep 'developing' the game this way, I might even delete my 2 accounts.
I was waiting for WoW before I started playing SWG, I might pick that up in the winter when it finally is on the shelves.

1) I have merchant
2) no
3) There isnt a system in place to ensure you get your money.. They could take it, sell it, and not give you a single credit.
4) If I had to sell to a merchant first, then yes, I would make him pay in full first.
To be honest, I cant see ever selling my stuff to a middle man (merchant).. My customers really like my low prices. The idea of selling to a merchant is a pretty bad one. Im a master architect, master artisan and master chef, with 3/4/0/4 merchant, I have the ability to sell my own stuff.
