They work real well. Our town's commercial set up is on Naboo, and we have straight rows of small round houses with an avenue in between them. I think the orderly rows lends to ease of use and shopping, rather than a more random or haphazard placement. You can see the name of each building. One little shop like that can hold quite a few vendors as well. Plus you do not have that annoying mall lag thing going on with 20 vendors barking something at you.

I like it.

I'm kind of an anti-mall kind of guy, instead of having a big fat store of vendors somewhere in town, I think a player city would look more realistic with a planned commercial district of houses and commercial structures set up as businesses. Small buildings would be cute little ma-n-pa shops and larger buildings would be plazas shared by a number of merchants. Would this work?

We started the city of New Haven with a tent bazaar area. Very neat, organized rows of tents all clearly named for their resective wares. It worked extremely well. As time passed and some players left though, we wound up with far too many empty vendors and empty tents. As a result, commerce in our city lagged a great deal....

A few months ago, we switched over to a "mall" type vendor setup.(a long, arduous task that I wouldnt wish on my worst enemy lol ) So far, it has worked extremely well, and trade in our city is almost up to where we were at the hghpoint of the Tent bazaar type.

Bottom line is, it all depends on your merchants. If 99% of em can keep their vendors stocked the commercial theme is awesome. If you have a situation where your merchants dont stay too long, a mall type may suit you better.

I am actually not a big fan of malls either. While I see their uses and benes, I like the "feel" of the business district a lot more.

Well, what we have right now are not malls. They are guild halls that are designed to be ... guild halls.

Although I don't disagree that some of these "malls" are either poorly laid out or so jammed packed it's hard to distinguish between the vendors, a 'real' mall could address the things you don't like.

Imagine a mall that encourages the use of all rooms in the structure.

Has areas like cubicles for x number of vendors only.

Has signage.

Has the ability to charge rent and sales taxes.

And so on.

Anyways, I just responded to this because I like the idea ofa mall structure that architects can build.

I like the city idea though but that is not an option for everyone who wants to be a merchant / store owner.

I think the best guild hall for that kind of thing is a Tatoonie stlye one, it has several rooms, hallways, and little pockets where shops can be set up

I like the idea of malls, if they could be done right. Having individual rooms with open fronts that merchants/artisans could rent from the city. They could decorate it as they see fit, with perhaps a item number limit, and place a few vendors inside. You could have food courts for your chefs to setup, furnature stores, weapons, etc. each with their own distinct decorating. I think it would be a cool idea for RP since you can tour around the mall, browsing the shops, and impulse buying

Don't get me wrong, I do like the individual shops as well, but I think both can co-exist easily. Plus having a mall might use up less of your allocated lots, and allow greater business since customers would have a one-stop place to hit.

Heh, my city has a bit of both worlds actually. We've got a designated business district that happens to have a large Corellian (sylte 1) mall in it. It just lends to an ease of shopping. All the vendors are in 1 area for a mallmeanwhile having to treck 8 houses down to get one item, cross the plaza for article # 2 etc. I happen to like both of them myself since I realize the positive qualities of a mall as well as having personal shops for each of the wares. As soon as we start getting more vendors the area will likely come together a lot nicer and become more bustling. One thing about shopping areas, however. Use homes more then tents. Actual houses just look a lot nicer than a gypsy layout.
