I'm not sure if this has been discussed or not, but I've noticed that if you are having trouble dropping a house on some land, have a ranger build a big camp on the spot where you want the home and it will "level" the terrain so you can place the house, the only drawback being that you can't place camps too close to other buildings (harvesters are ok).
