Thread: Furniture Naming Madness
But look what this has led to! Kristonnacracker! I see people selling level three architect furniture and renaming all the pieces to things like "Executive luxury casual series .. blah blah blah". I'm shopping for a "Wonderful Uber Way Better Than Pete's Crappy Furniture Line Couch", can you help me? Do you happen to carry any of the "Sunset in Paradise Really Froopy and Way Cooler Than Joe's Fartarse Furniture Bookcase?"
Really, people. Get a grip. I resorted to changing my furniture names too, just to avoid confusion, but the level one couch I called a "Basic Couch". The level 3 I called a "Curving Couch" (because it's curved... duh.) And all the master architect pieces I just called "Master's Couch" etc.
I only wished I'd originally thought of the scheme that one architect on Starsider came up with. He named them "Couch I, Couch III, and Couch V" based on what level you needed to make them.
It really gets annoying when people go into some of the grossly overpriced furniture shops on Tarquinas, see something they want, decide they aren't going to buy it at that price, then e-mail me requesting "..and two each of the Executive Semi-Formal Table, please."
Now I'm writing back, getting in tells, and spending an extra ten minutes trying to figure out that they wanted a darned Dining Table. Some of the furniture comes with a perfectly acceptable name that is distinct from all other items. Others have this same-name problem, but really only need to be modified a little bit so we all know what items is being discussed.
Get a grip, please!
went into a droid engineer's shop and saw a couch in the "waiting room" area with a name of "Hot s3xxors".
I nearly gagged.
Totally agree, but atleast on Lowca server it isn't that bad. Most of the master architects that i've seen (and myself included) name them couch I couch II couch III based on first couch available, 2nd couch available, etc. (ie. not what skill level u can make it on, but on how many couchs there are)
You think the devs could just easily change the names of the duplicates so everyone has something to go by.
i dont use the couch/couch2/couch 4 names - I just pick other names that describe the items.
Ie I have a toolchest and a 'TALL' toolchest to differentiate.
I change the 2nd loveseat to 'sofa' and the 3rd loveseat to 'lounger'.
What I HATE seeing is loveseat by 'bill'. I dont ever want to look around my house and see 'by bill' plastered over every item. Use your brains people - its a real deterrent to sales.

Exactly my point. I know that coming up with new graphics, or functionality for various pieces, (e.g. making the lights actually give light, etc.) might take some time and coding work, but to just assign a different name to the item in the database? Come on, devs. Throw us a bone. You couldn't get more creative than just "Chair"?
So basically you are complaining about how people name their furniture…because it’s making you work harder when underselling them?
Priceless.

Idiots not withstanding, I'll try to explain it in smaller words for you. It's a communications and clarity problem. (Ooops. Too many sylables again, I'm sure, but that's how it goes.) First of all, there's no reason the devs couldn't assign a slightly different name to each item so everyone knows which piece we are talking about for bug reports, sales, technical questions, etc.
Second issue is communications with customers. With the bizzar naming practices some furniture sales folks have adopted, there's no way to quickly tell what a customer is asking for when they use some of these completely off the wall names.
From the tone of your "helpful addition to this thread" I assume that you fall into either one or both of the categories of people who charge a ton for furniture, and/or have come up with those lovely "oh so creative" furniture names.
/sigh
I use creative names. My customers like them and I like them.
My personal favorite is Loveseat3 which I call "Wookie Nookie Loveseat."
I likewise rename the food I sell. It's much more interesting to buy Tusken Raider Taters rather than Synthsteak, or Boba Fett-ucine rather than Telsier Noodles, or Deathstar Popcorn Balls rather than Travel Biscuits. I sell the food mostly as potential decorations for houses. Not much profit but I do get a lot of compliments.
Being able to view the graphics of an item while browsing a vendor or bazaar means there's no confusion for my customers about what they get. They are happy which I care a lot more about thanappeasing creatively challenged competitors. Your complaints are amusing in fact. ![]()

/agree lol..... this is one of the more humorous posts that I've read.
I sell a lot of furniture and have yet to rename any piece. imho customer's buy based upon looks and price and usually look at and compare items before they buy. If someone can be creative in a manner that allows them to charge a few hundred extra credits..... /cheers for them for being a better business person than I.
Perhaps the funniest part was about keeping the names similar would assist in bug reports. Someone seems to be suggesting that CS is real and responds to bug reports.
This post does have some merit though. I think the reasons that have been stated were poorly chosen and chosen for the wrong reasons. If a player renames an item so as to misrepresent that item to the buyer, that is totally wrong. It would be unethical to sell a small house labeled as a large or medium.
Isn't this a moot point once the devs add the "real name" feature they've promised? We are supposed to be able to see anitem's default name in addition to the made-up name.
Besides, what if I don't like the name the devs give to something? "Small Modern End Table"?? Nice name. Calling something a cool name that fits improves sales. I rename certain things that have lame names (like that end table) and I do a brisk business in my vendors. So far I've never had someone ask me for some weird named item because most people seem to understand that naming might vary. They tend to just come in and look at what's on my vendor, which shows them a nice picture so they know what they are getting.
Besides, the current method is very realistic. If I buy a standard couch and someone asks me what kind it is, I'm either going to say "It's a couch" (because I'm not into worrying about my furniture's pedigree) or I'm going to say "It's the Dominator 2000" because I'm a rich snob who thinks it's important to have designer furniture. No one is ever going to buy a "couch 3", unless they are living in a communist society that forces manufacturers to name all their furniture the same.
Remember, furniture is basically useless in this game. The only value we can add as sellers of useless items is an image. Players buy a house and furnish it to augment their in-game image. If your customers want to fill up a house with a bunch of stuff that's named exactly the same as everyone else's, then go for it. But my customers are buying more than another "Metal Chair". They are buying something with a cool name, which I'm not going to reveal because at this point my names arestill a semi-trade secret ![]()
end users can rename a travel pack, i dont see why they shouldnt be allowed to rename there furniture.
