Thread: A question regarding lag.....

Whenever I stand by my factory and try to put stuff into the ingredient hopper I experience severe lag, this makes loading up my factories a real chore, does anybody else experience the same ? Will I fix it if I increase my RAM ? I currently have 384MB RAM and am thinking of upgrading to 1GB. Would this be worth it ?

of course, this is not an architect question at all, but as this is the forum I do all my posting on I didn't even think about that until afterwards....

....I will post on the tech support forum, but in the meantime if anybody feels like answering then that is fine with me, otherwise just move on.

I havent noticed any particular lag while using my factories either. I too have 1 GB of RAM.

Aren't you in Europe Bandola? Not sure if that has anything to do with it. But I'd think you'd be more prone to getting hit with lag cause of the distance.

maybe that has something to do with it, but I don't understand why it only happens at my factory, nowhere else

Is your factory full of stuff? Might be taking a little while to load all those items, like the lag when you first enter a house. My factory is full too but maybe it doesn't hurt me too much cause I'm closer to the server. *shrug*

Can't hurt to get more RAM though.

It's true that more RAM is good, but more RAM on your video card is best. I have a system comparable to a friend, with the exception of our RAM and video RAM. I have 1GB DDRRAM and a 128MBDDRRAM video card. He has 768 DDRRAM and a 256MB DDRRAM video card. His framerate and loadtimes are much better than mine, whereas my initial loading of game files is faster than his. We both have DSL with really close to the same transfer rates. I suggest upgrading your video card to one of the higher end GeForce FX or Radeon cards if your system can support it and you can afford it.

Are those two video cards exactly the same otherwise?

Or are you comparing a Radeon 9600 with 128MB to a Radeon 9800 Pro with 256MB?

I'd expect that the card with 256MB is performing better cuase it probably has a better chip onboard. I wouldn't expect there to be much real difference in performance between two cards using the same chip if one has 256MB and the other has 128MB. There are diminishing returns to video memory and I think above 128MB its really not beneficial.

I asked on Tech Support and got a very helpful guy advising me the same, it is most likely the video card, I am running a 64MB Nvidia GeForce4 MX420, looks like I need to upgrade to 128 or 256MB (I remember that not so long ago 16MB was awesome!). I will also upgrade the RAM to 1 gig, as stated, more RAM is always cool.

Thanks to all for the help

Just a quick thought, that video card is the same as mine, i used to get lag on 512mb of memory, but since upgrading to 1gig i have had virtually no lag, even with my not so hot video card...

Though i do fully intend upgrading my video card, but have more important things to spend my hard earned cash on right now.

Thanks for that Trax, I will go with the RAM upgrade on it's own first then, I can always get a new Video card later if things don't improve enough.

you have the new generation cards out and i bet after a while they will start lowering all the other cards. you have the radeon x800 pro for 399 i beleive and the XT for 499 and then the nvidia 6800 for around 499. its beleived that the ship date for the radeon X800 will be closer to the end of june though. the X800 pro and the nvidia 6800 are already out. so check into those if you have the cash.

Going from 512M to 1G of RAM on my laptop made a *huge* difference in the SWG lag that I experienced.
