Thread: I say no to item decay...
I'm a part-time architect (mostly due to the fact that I can't get any business thanks to people selling at 2cr per and less, but that's another topic), and I think structure decay would do nothing but hurt the profession. As mentioned, other classes are likely to resent us for it, since it's not something the devs are pushing for, it'd be something we pushed for. You've seen the backlashes at the devs... Another reason I think it would hurt the profession is from watching the demand of droids drop dramatically after permadeath. Droid Engineers were concerned somewhat that they would make themselves obsolete, since a droid was basically a one-time-sell, and then permadeath came around. Now, instead of people buying 4 and 5 probots, they do without entirely, and I can't blame them. Would you spend 15k-25k on something that you'll likely have to replace anywhere from once a week to daily? Perhaps DE's would sell more if they came down in price, but in our situation, houses are already commonly selling for at or less than the resources themselves, we can't afford to drop the prices more.
However, I am for the decay of furniture if it can be done well. Maybe have it depend on how many times it was sat on, or how many people visited the room, etc. There are a few problems with this, namely people being able to grief the owner of public structures. There are also some items I'm not sure if I'd like to see decay or not, for selfish reasons. I don't want to see crafting stations decay, because I don't want to have to build mine again.
I'm also all for building structures that are usable in combat, though I don't think it should be faction specific, but rather generic items that either side can purchase.
The structure decay would be at a reasonable rate people. As I had suggested in another topic, several months. Harvesters would only decay when they are up and running. Size ofthe structure would be longer to decay.8 months for a small house is NOT unreasonable(in a game).18 months for a medium house,24 months for a large house, PA halls never.
however... I dont like the idea of houses decaying, but I wouldnt mind if harvesters did, and furniture.
I am not an artichitect but do not want to see my house decayor my harvesters etc. If I kept having to buy a house over and over, I honestly would rather not at some point. Medium and Large harvesters maybe, but not small ones for people who do not play the game as much. They are already punished by resources shifting without prior warning.
Some ideas thought: I think artichetects should be able to build faction items... ONE FACTION ONLY THOUGH.. and ONLY AFTER attaining 1000 faction points somehow be it delivery missions (your faction apprenticeship) or an ingame choice declaring a faction. Allowing architects to make both imperial and rebel faction items would not be good also because these items will be a huge part of the game in the future and the demand would be strong, probably stronger than anything else.
I am thinking something like working 3 ingame hours to create the largest faction building (which currently costs 60,000 rebel points for rebels?). Players would have to give up a discounted number of rebel points (say 15,000 for the largest one) to set them up. They could still be obtained from the NPC but at the higher cost. Of course the largest item should need about 3,000+ resources total but not too much because they can be destroyed by members of the other side.
Finally I want to discuss the issue of architects selling each other out. Currenly it is possible to buy a small house on Bloodfin for 2,000 credits. I see some selling them for 10,000 some for 5,000... but it is the people who undercut to level up that are messing with the economy. They think when they get to the top... they will make money with guild halls and such.. but guilds then always manage to find an architect who will craft the hall if one supplies resources for a minor fee... I just don't see the point about why artisans are destroying each others business by selling stuff for so low?
Anyway hope this is useful to someone. I do think architects should be viable forever but the way to do that is through faction stuff and not item decay in my opinion. Player built cities are also coming... if architects could build stuff for those.. surely these cities could use some maintaining and there could be temporary items like "healing parks" (heal your wounds.. but not so much so docs have it bad), or or scenery items. Sorry for rambling on...
I don't want to see decay either for purely selfish reasons first. I built my home I do not ever want to build it again. I built my heavy harvesters I don't ever want to build them again. For me that is. I will build for anyone that asks if I have the resources but I do not want to have to re-build my own. They are a pain in the petousi to build only want to sweat through that again if im getting paid.
Pushing for item decay just to ensure a market for us will create nothing but resentment in the community. Homes, Factorys, Harvesters are DURABLE items in other words they last decades even centuries in the case of houses and some factorys. It also is not any answer to our problem.
Our problem is
1: 2 or 3 times as many Architects as the servers can support maybe more. Its not the rest of the playerbases fault that so many people thought being architect would be the way to get rich.. little did most know that weaponsmith/armorsmith is.
Untill this gives not one thing will change as far as the economics for architects all decay will do is foster undercutters hanging on because now they can and are not forced out by having to turn a profit when they make something and yes you should HAVE to make a profit or you should go broke and out of business.
2: There are to few and no customizable items in the architect line. THIS above all else needs to be rectified
How?
Add colors to the furniture (duh!) should not have gotten out of beta without it.
Add more frickin furniture the line is a joke compared to what we see in the game not even a fraction of whats out there.
Put factional structures and or the new city buildings IN THE CONSTRUCTION line! Doesn't need to be both but one or the other.
Don't create a new Elite-Elite profession on top of Architect its already cut-throat enough now that people are crying for nerfs to buildings/structures to justifie their existance.
