Im new to the Artisan and Architect Professions. I was wondering how my brother and sister architects run there businesses?

I have a Large Generic House on Dantooine and a Medium Generic house also on Dantooine. I use My Large as my Residence and my Medium as my Stockroom. What do you think is the best for running a business. Should I get another house or just continue doing it the way i do. ?

Personally, I have a small style II naboo (1 lot) that I only use for residence in my city... my business is carried out throught a tent in the city's downtown which the city merchant owns, so no lots. My remaining 9 lots are dedicated to 8 harvs and 1 fusion... got a townmate to place my factory for me, so no lots there.

Sorry if that didn't answer your question... but I think that was what you were asking? =)

I haveone medium house. Can't spare the lots for more. I think thats the case with many/most of us. I've got one vendor there for structures and another vendor in our towns mall for furniture. I use my structure factory input/output bins for a lot of storage.

I did a thing a week or two here that is probably on page 4-5 by now called "The Solo Architect". It laid out a model for what one character with 10 lots *could* do to set up their business, and some of the issues that they might have. Then people contributed a number of suggestions for how that "basic" model of operating could be made more productive. I think if you find that post and read through people's comments there is a lot of value there.

One thing that you'll find out as a practicing architect is that, unless you really specialize in furniture or crafting stations only, you *MUST* mine as much of your own resources as possible. That means absolutely maximizing the number of harvesters you have pumping at all times. The means to do this range from using the least number of lots for your house and factory to having a friend actually own your house and factory to give you full access to your 10 lots for mining.

For example, my wife has a character on Wanderhome (where I play my architect) that she doesn't play much. So that character owns my house, my 2 structure factories, and my equipment factory. That leaves me with all 10 of my lots to use for mining. I *always* have 1 fusion and 9 minerals out there. Typically I'll have 6-7 harvesters on ore, and another 2-3 on some metal. Obviously if some godly steel spawns I'll put all 9 on it, but over time I have to get enough ore in to make anything.

Get rid of the extra housing. 2 lots for a medium, 2 lots for a factory, 6 lots of heavies cranking out ore.

Then find friends who will give you their lots for free. At one time I managed an additonal 12 lots.

Then find friends who will sell resources at 2 credits per. Efficient resource hounds can produce minerals for .75 per, so at 2 credits per they are still making a nice profit. Most people always want 3 per, but if you agree to buy huge quantities and always buy their stuff you can get suppliers at 2 per.

Mine your own ore! We use ore in a 4 to 1 or 5 to 1 ratio of any other resource, assuming you are building structures not furniture. The more ore you produce yourself the better your profit margins will be.

There are tons of ways to try and market yourself. I cruise the boards and look for the big deals. Often giving decent discounts to get good word of mouth. If you get noticed on the boards that can lead to a ton of business.

I run my business out of my declared residence in my Medium house in my player city. I like making and selling furniture, and I use my declared residence as a means of displaying my wares, much like the best tailors do as well. With my vendor on the planetary map, business just rolls in the door constantly. It doesn't need to be in a merchant tent.

And Zen- You really should drop that lot wasted on a fusion gen and start paying for power. I pay just 2 cpu for radioactive. That same lot can mine me far more steel/ore/whatever than the 2 cpu costs for power. Subcontracting power is an excellent means of maximizing your lot usage. I have the lots to use on power (4 active accounts worth of lots), but it was a hassle, that at 2cpu, I found wasn't worth it.

Trying to run an Architect biz on just 10 lots, i believe, is just way too hard. As stated earlier, the ore requirements are just huge. I find the best way is to borrow/rent lots. Make as many heavies as possible to help maximize the pull (though i use mainly mediums, BE-10). Try offering new people, or fighting professions, money for their lots, or even a trade for items. This works great for novice artisans also, as 2 or 3 medium BE-10's is all they need for a while, and you can trade 2 or 3 to them, in exchange for their other lots for 2-3 weeks. I typically do 10-25k per week, per lot, depending. Guild members are also great to hit up, especially if you agree to give them free whatever they need. Once the harvesters are placed, rather than bother the ppl who's lots they are on, i somply just switch to the highest resource upon resource switches. Using this model, I have my house, structure factory, and equipment factory on my lots, and the remainder 5 are always moved to the highest ore deposit i can find. I manage over 80 lots using this method.

Also, if you can, offer cross-server lot swaps. I have a 2 houses & 4 factories up that way, which allows me to run a buissness and maximize a characters harvesting potential.

I have two accounts so am a bit better off than most of my breathern. I also have a server trade for 20 lots, so I am able to have a good farm set up.

Mistaken (My BH/Ranger):

  • Personal Residence: Medium Naboo on Dantooine - 2 Lots.

  • Structure Factory: 2 lots

  • 6 Lots for Harvesters as Cal needs. Usually one for power.

Cal'amari: (The Squid)

  • One owned Tent: Merchant #1 (One Lot)

  • Wearables Factory (One Lot)

  • Medium Naboo House: Primary Residence (2 lots)

  • Movable Harvesters, always One Fusion Generator.

  • Will be adding 2-3 tents. (One tent is now owned by the city-may take this one over)

Lot Trade (2 accounts, 20 lots)

  • Equipment Factory

  • Food & Chem Factory

  • Structure Factory

  • 11 Medium Mineral Harvesters

  • 1 Medium Gas Harvester

  • 2 Medium Floral Harvesters

  • 1 Small Style 1 Naboo House (2 Lots)

I have another trade set up and ready to go, will configure it:

  • 1 Wearable Factory (Replaces the one Cal'amari uses

  • 2 Chemical

  • 1 Large Naboo House or Tatooine Guild Hall - Furniture Show Room (6 or 7 lots)

  • If Large House, then add 1 Mineral.

These trades are very helpful as long as I am making money. Since my maintenance cost is 48/hr for all my structures (not counting houses and vendors) my current confiburation costs me 1152 c/day per harvester/structure for a total per day cost of: 20,736 per day or 622,080 per month. Housing and Tents are running 34 and 12/hr respectively, and the vendors are 16/hr since they are registered on the gloabl map. All told, I guess I am close to 1M per month in outlay.

Howdy

My first question is: are you in a guild? If so then see if you can use one of the rooms in the basement as your crafting/storage area. Thats what I did....I have tons of stuff in it now..

Like others here I have a Med house only. Get rid of the large one you have and use those lots for mining ore and steel.

To get your business off the ground, you might be able to work out a deal with a Master Arch for some of his/her over flow business. What I mean by this is there may be someone like me on your server that is semi-retired from Master Arching (however, seems like im more busy then ever..LOL) who could refer to you if they are too busy. Another thing I did when I started out was that I was paying a 5% commissions for referrals. Worked out very well for everyone. Me, the person referring and the buyer.

Last note: Always have your Novice Arch title on. Seems, at least on my server, that archs are in short supply. People will search for an arch and you will get /tells out of the blue.

Good luck.
