My friend is thinking about joining the game, but he wanted to knowif you designed your own houses or if simply manufacturedpre-designed ones.

The floorplans are fixed. SOE has posted examples of all of the floorplans. Click on the "Advanced Guides" link on the main SWG page, and there's a link for player housing.

You can't make your own floorplan but you can spend all the time in the world decorating it. People make all sorts of stuff like fishtanks and zoo exhibits. Some pretty creative work really.

Yeah, if your friend wants a game where he can design his own home he might want to take a look at the one made six years ago.
