Color is added by hex code. This is a six digit code with numbers from 0-F. The command is \#000000 where the first two digits represent red the second two green and the last set blue. I have found that the lower the number the darker the color.

signs/harvesters and backpacks can have their name changed to a different colour. Crafted items use to be able to have their colour changed, but for some unknown stupid special dumb reason, the devs decided they wanted to go back to the 50's and not let us use colour in items names. You are probably seeing pre nerf items with coloured names, yes it was a nerf, you nerfed every crafter in the game.
Apparently the reason for removing colour (UK English spelling I note, and damn right too) was because it was actually more effective onthe Bazaar for attracting attention than the skill 'Premium Auctions' or whatever it was called, which did nothing, zip, zilch, nada. So to make the skill worth having they took away colour, not realising that the bazaar was already becoming reduntant to most people who had reached Business II.
Oops I didn't realize they'd removed it. I used a color on the name of a backpack not too long ago but maybe thats handled differently than the names given during item creation.

Yes Pawlin, they took the color out of item creation. Sucks! I love coloring my stuff. I don't use the bazaar anymore but it helps make the items on my own vendor look appealing. I used to color my harvesters a different color for the size to make it easier for the customer to thumb through the list.
The Travel packs, etc when they are in your inventory are still colorable yes. But during item creation no. Ya know, it wouldn't be a bad idea to re-impliment it if you have 0-0-0-1 tailor? I think some of us Architects can muster up the sp to get that. But that's just my opinion.
