Thread: Harvest my own ore or not?

Ive just spent the better part of 4 hours looking for a good 60%+ spawn of Carbonate Ore on Bria, with no success. The most I could find was just over 40% and then I couldnt build on the damn things, too near a town heh.I have 8 heavy harvesters to use for this but with the low spawn rate of ore im wondering if I should just give up and continue to buy ore at 2.5-3cpu, using my harvesters for another resource I can use.

What do you all think? Is 8 harvesters just too low an amount to use effectively for mining ore? Let me know your opinions please and what you would do instead.

Thanks

8 Harvesters is fine, spots over 60% require alot of looking to find, but you can pull alot.

IMO, Mining your own ore mostly if your on a small scale helped with walls alot, because finding good vendors for resourcesthat constantly restock is hard.

Other options are:

Static Harvesters

Pay Resource Suppliers

There are a few good ore providers on Bria. I don't mine much of my own ore. Even if I have to pay 3 or 3.5 cpu it, that's nothing compared to what it'd cost if I mined ore but purchased high quality steel or some other expensive resource that I need.

I've got a limited number of lots (as most people do), and I use them to gather the rare materials I need for weaponsmith or things like reactive gas which are hard to find on vendors. I'll let the guys running 200 harvesters harvest things I need in bulk such as ore and lube oil. If they make a healthy profit off selling ore to me I'm fine with that because in the long run it saves me money.

Inflation with resource providers charging 3.5 and up for ore to make walls (and pretty much not good for anything else) drove every major architect on Tempest to collect thier own through whatever means possible. There's a LOT of difference between a .5 cost and a 3.5 cost, especially when I use upwards of 2 million units a week of ore.

Well lets think about thisfrom a business standpoint. Most structures use a-sloads of resorces and unless you are making harvesters the econamy's of the servers rarly let you sell buildings for much more than 3cpu. So if you are buying your ore for 3 cpu you arn't making nearly as much as you would if you were mining it for about .5 cpu. personally i NEVER buy ore, it's just not worth it, we use so much ore in walls and other components it eats into profits too much. I do(on occasion) buy other components that i use in smaller qualities, but never ore. Best thing i find is find some fellow surveyers who are nice enough to tell you when they find new high % spots. If you were on Bloodfin i'd help.... /shrug

I have stopped massive production....

If i find a good ore spot then i will mine it....if not then i mine metal....i just keep onme factory pumping out strcuure modules with what ever ore i can pull and then do wall modules about once a month....that is really working well with the current market which is pretty depressed at the moment....i have supplies to build a ton of stuff if i get an order but i have stopped making 20 items at a time

buying ore is just not good business unless you can get it for 2 -2.5....if you can find a cheap source then it is super beneficial since you can free up machines to mine gass and chem and metal or power...i mined power at first and just used that money to buy ore but the power market has gone downhill on my server and its selling for 1 -1.5...but you could do the same thing with otehr metals...but i find ALL the markets sad right now....

i really think many people have left

Unless you have a couple characters and do lots of cross server lot trades, there's no way a large scale architect could supply themselves with enough ore. I run 10 lots. Ore densities being what they are, I'd be lucky to harvest 700K units of ore per week. And that doesn't even allow for gas, steel, alum, copper and everything else we need. Not to mention I'd then have to purchase my WS materials, and those don't come cheap.

As I said, in my particular case it makes far more sense for me to mine the things that I'd otherwise pay 10cpu or more for and purchase my ore at slightly higher prices. 3.5cpu for ore is acceptable to me when I sell for 6cpu because I'm harvesting resources at .5cpu and selling them as weapons for 50cpu or more.

Let's not forget that the architect market saturates faster than it grows. Thus you better be making the maximum possible cpu, i.e. harvest your own ore. There will only be so many house sales and harvesters sales before they reduce to a trickle.

When I started buying some resources my progress really slowed down. Wish I had not done that.
