Thread: Trading HQ Steel for Low Quality Steel, what is a fair ratio?

Hey everyone, I've gotten into the habit of just harvesting the High HR/SR/UT Steel, and I can't see myself using it for Walls, Turbines, or Structure Modules. Thus I always seem to have a shortage of 'grind' Steel, and I thought maybe I could tradeit toanother Architect. Would 1:3 be a fair ratio of High HR/SR/UT Steel to 'grinding' Steel?

At some level it depends on supply / demand, just like anything else - both server-wide and what that other architect needs.

I assume you are talking "bulk quanities" of stuff, like 100+K? What is the current "spot price" for the high quality stuff in that quantity? For the grind quality stuff? If the high quality stuff is going for 9 cpu (just to pick a number) and the grind is going for 3 cpu, then perhaps a 3:1 ratio would work.

I'm in the same boat - trying to trade 200K of high-conductivity copper for 500-600K of junk copper for generator turbines. Part of the problem is that people either don't mine the junk stuff or they unload it so quickly that they don't have a stockpile of it.

You *could* just sell it - but then you are back out in the open market trying to find grind stuff.

I actually suggest you hang onto it. Either drop a few harvesters onto some junk as soon as you can, or contact a miner or two and give them a fixed contract to bring you 200-400K of grind steel for 2 cpu (or whatever you negociate) ASAP.

I'd also post on your Galaxy trading board - that at least got me a few contacts.

I definitely was talking about bulk trades =) I couldn't imagine trading 1k for 3k. I thought about the trade idea, since most ofthe stuff Architects mine... can only be used by Architects, and that some Architects are also static lotters so they may have large 'grind' qualities. The whole problem with selling and then buying is... well selling and then buying =) I think i'll try the trade boards, and maybe contact some Architect on my own server and see what they say. I just wanted to figure out what would be a fair offer. Thanks ZenDragon, you've always got wise responses.

Personally, I can't think of any situation where I'd want to get rid of high quality materials... it seems to me that junk spawns more frequently than the good stuff. However, since you asked...

I'd go by the price on the open market. If you'd sell your metal for 8cpu, and buy the junk metal for 2cpu, then the trade ratio would be 1:4. If you'd sell for 10cpu, the ratio would be 1:5, etc.

Like ZenDragon said though, you might be better off just stopping the harvesting of high quality stuff and concentrating on low quality for a while. Another alternative would be to hook up with someone who doesn't use all their lots and ask them to drop some harvs for you - making you admin, so you can run them. I dropped 11 harvs on some HQ steel one time, and still had lots left over for my flora and chem harvs Just a thought.
