If factories require several types of identical components, and you need factories to make identical components.... where did the first structure factories come from?

Factories don't require identical, just "similar."

As far as I can determine "similar" means "any hand or factory made item of this type."

Hey all, I just got Master Arch not too long ago...what is the best way to get started with arch? My intentions are to run a pretty successful business, starting out by selling harvesters, and then houses. How should a new architect get started? Harvest your own resources or buy resources (mainly ore) until you have collected enough from harvesters. Also what's the best factory setup? Currently I have a house (2 lots), one factory (2 lots), and 6 harvesters running (6 lots). It seems like it's going to take a while to get all the materials i need, I'm running structure modules out of my factory atm, but I can't supply the ingredients fast enough to continue making them. Seems like you need a TON of these things, so am I right by mass producing these first?

I have as many harvesters as I can up and running (2 accounts, plus guild friends) and I still buy grind materials for walls, structure mods, generators etc. Two points:

1. Make structure modules. When you're done, make more. Then, make some more. When you finally think you have enough, make even more. You CANNOT make too many structural modules if you are going to be selling buildings. Some of the larger city structures take 20 walls, which is 200 structure mods. Heavy mineral harvesters take 7 walls. I have one factory totally devoted to structural modules and walls.

2. Keep your eyes open for good grinding materials, especially carbonate ore, which has two uses: in walls, and in generator turbines (where it is required). Any time I see carbonate ore for less than 2cpu, I buy as much as I can.

One final hint. If you don't mind doing rush jobs, put your master tag up and take a walk around the more populated areas of your server. I have gotten more business from random tells than I ever have through my vendors.

Good luck!

I don't think there is just one "best" setup. It depends on how you want to do it. I have ran 1-2 factories and bought most of my materials which works fine for me, but other very successful architect run 5 factories and a fleet of 60 harvesters.

I wrote an architect guide a bit ago that you might want to check out.

It sounds like you have a decent set up for production.

I personally try not to buy materials (unless their extremely cheap) because it cuts into the limited profit margin of the profession.

Definitely keep pumping out the structure modules and turn them into walls, you'll go through a ton of those... I usually dump enough resources into the factory to make 1000 at a time, then turn around and make walls out of them right away so I have plenty of walls on hand.

Since you only have the one house for storage of parts / materials, utilize the factory's input and output hoppers for storage (don't take parts out of the output hopper unless it's full or you're going to use them in a factory run right away). This will maximize your storage / lot usage.

With only 6 harvesters going, I would try to keep at least 2 or 3 constantly on good ore spots, at least 1 on steel and the other 2 on misc. resources you require (copper, alum, chem, or gas) as needed.

I wouldn't think about buying resources till you've got your operation under full swing and have some income trickling in... then you can re-invest your profits into more resources to bolster your production.

Best of luck to ya.

Thanks for the tips Feyd. I'm also a TKM, so while my factory/harvs have been running I've been doing some janta missions to save up for resources should I need them.

Not too many people sell furniture anymore on my server. I found that while I harvested my resources (for big lots) and started factory runs with those big lots, I used the smaller resource stacks and leftovers from factories to make furniture by hand. It has a good margin and tends to draw a lot of foot traffic.
