Thread: on building/item decay
Thought I'd suggest we move this to its own thread - the week three issues thread is getting overly focused on this one issue.
I'd like to throw inthat I'm in favour of it, in SOME form. No, a pistol does not require fee-based upkeep - but it decays and the person has to go buya new one. A person pays maintenance fees on a house, but it's not like WE get those fees (I wish!). Here are some thoughts:
1) Maintenace goes down, but buildings decay and need repairs. A combo approach is more 'realistic' - if you skimp on maintenance then your buiding decays faster - however I could see them wanting to keep it simple and using one method or the other.
2) Better quality materials used in construction = slower decay rate. I build houses out of crap, and they're just as good asa house made from 'premium' materials.
3) Having your decayed building repaired needs to be simple. Requiring the player to go out, buy something, and do it himself is more bother than I think most non-crafters would put up with. It would be nice if they could say, 'hey, go fix my house and I'll give you 1000 credits' or something, then have some way to enforce it - almost like an assigned mission where it is assigned to one person and payment is automatically made on completion, except from some funds the contracting player sets aside when they agree to hire you. Would be a way for novices to make money now that I can't seem to pique any interestin small houses - everyone seems to have one and I'm running delivery missions again. ![]()
4) Do the repair system as in 3 or something similar, but allow players to pay maintenance and avoid decay entirely - but make a small part of the maintenance go to the building architect.
5) Maybe this is already there, I don't know as I never make the stuff - have furniture decay and be repairable. Heck, much as I wish I never had to buy a new couch, I do.
On a related but different subject, I'd like to see a way to simply transfer ownership of a building without having to re-deed it. This would let me sell my house on the beachfront in an area that's built up (no room for new houses) for more than it would sell for as a deed. Just make the house show up in the 'secure trade' window somehow.
