Thread: Is it possible to properly place furniture or is the stuff useless?

I just bought some furniture for a new house and, unless there's a trick to easy and precise placement of these items that I'm missing, have now sworn off the stuff.

I cannot place the items where I want them, and just getting some items to end up even close takes forever. Even then, the items are uneven and downright silly looking.

So, is there a way to fix this or is furniture close to useless?

Any help is much appreciated!

Best,

I do have to agree. Whoever designed the furniture placement system needs to be smacked.

I am constantly amazed at how many people just post a problem without even scrolling down a couple pages to see if ti's been posted already.

This has been posted 9000 times. I'll post it again, since you're too lazy to look.

You can target any piece of furniture and TYPE (yes, I said type, those buttons are crap):

/rotate left (degrees) (i.e. /rotateleft 45)

/rotate right (degrees)

/move forward (value) (i.e. /move forward 2)

/move back (value)

The forward and back are directly related to the direction YOU are facing, NOT the furniture.

I have been able to set up numerous houses and move furniture all over the place, to almost EXACTLY the spot I want it. It may take a few times before you're used to doing it quickly.

Remember, CTRL-UPARROW scrolls through previous message you typed, so if you're doing a lot of moves or rotates, you can save some time by scrolling up to repeat commands. Also, typically MOVE commands will rotate the object out of the alignment you had it in. Don't worry, it's more important it's moved to where you need it, rotating is easy.

Is there a /move up? Or /move down?

I want to place a fish on the wall, but every time I drop it, it drops to the floor.

Thanks,
Oy.

Some hopefully helpful information from a Furniture specialist. (I have a ton of it in my crowded showroom, so I have to move it a lot, and help customers who have problems.)

First, *almost* all of the furniture has a "center point" that it rotates on, and that center point will land right at the heels of your feet when you /drop it. It's not always in the middle of the piece of furniture, which can be confusing, but don't let that stop you. For each piece, you'll get the hang of where it lands, so stand right where you want it to be. The /move forward and /move backward options are fine, but they only go in certain increments. You can wind up with your couch too far from the wall for your liking, or inside of it a bit if you start from the wrong spot. This is the biggest problem people seem to run into in placing their furniture. If it doesn't land in the spot you want, in terms of distance from the wall, pick it up, move your feet a tad in the desired direction and drop it again.

NOTE: I said "*almost*" above, because the small bed is bugged. It drops behind you by a couple feet for some reason.

Next, the /rotate commands are relative to your position facing the furniture, much like the forward and back commands. All furniture will drop facing a default direction. If it's not the way you want it to face, you'll need to spin it. If you choose rotate left, the right hand leading edge of the piece as it faces you will move to the left. That's the best way to figure out which way it's going to swing.

You can't move furniture into a wall more than a small, annoying bit, but you CAN rotate furniture through the wall. So, if you place your couch right by the wall in the spot you want, but it's facing the wall, you can still rotate half of it through the wall to spin it around to proper alignment.

As to up and down, sadly no. Just like the rest of the stupid design of this aspect of the game, there is no z-axis. Everything baselines to the default "floor level" for graphical display. What this effectively means is that you can't place anything on top of anything else. This makes the lovely table top lamp model one and two, and the desk lamp, totally useless. If you drop them on top of your patio table, they disappear into it and sit invisibly on the floor. You'll have to pick up the table again to retrieve the smaller lamp.

This does lead to some interesting options, however. I've had customers come up with some wonderfully creative ways to place things. I've seen both the torch and the free standing lamp (which doesn't light up, by the way... nothing gives real light but torches. Fix please, devs) dropped right in the center of small tables and cafe tables. The end effect is that they stick up out of the center of the table, and in the case of the torch, throws light on the table and the surrounding chairs. Makes for a great conversation nook.

Another tip you might not realize is that almost any item you have can be dropped in your house and will show up with its own unique graphic. One of my customers made the most amazing headboard for his small bed this way. He dropped a free standing lamp at the center of the head of the bed, then dropped four combat staffs on each side of it in a row. (The weapons land in an upright position and stay there.) In front of them, by only inches, he dropped two large axes facing opposite ways with the blades facing out. It made for a most dramatic and impressive headboard.

Another one caught some blowfish while fishing, and dropped two of them in the corner next to his fishing rod. They sit on the floor looking like, ... well, like blowfish. It was a comical and creative display.

Try going through your inventory and dropping random items in your house to see what their graphic looks like and how they land. You might be pleasantly surprised and can come up with some very creative looks. Ask novice artisans to make you a whole bunch of cheap, crappy items that people normally don't use and drop those. You'll probably make some newbie happy with a cheap sale, and you might find a really unique way to decorate your home so it doesn't look like everyone else's. I've got a few favorites of my own, but I won't give away all my secrets here. :-)

Happy decorating!

(Man, I just realized, I think I'll repost this in the game guide forum!)

I just wanted to submit another "creative" idea to Jazzmaniandevil. Im a newbie crafter So I made like 5-10 robes yesterday, it worked out as good xp Anyway, what you could do is grab oh like a wood staff place it standing upright, and place the robe on top of it (this is more for a womans house) This creates the effect of...STANDING CLOTHES, no not really...

I am sure this has been posted before, but just in case it has not... You do know that you can just create macros for the furniture move commands right ? They even come with usefull buttons you can place in your short cut bar. I dont use the radial menu, its cumbersome and slow.

/move forward 1

/move back 1

/rotate left

/rotate right

Each has a nice iron. Decorated a medium with those buttons in like 40 minutes.

Along with the actual commands ("move forward" and such), in addition to hotkeying them if you wish, you can also alias them.

For example,

/alias mf /move forward
/alias mb /move backward
/alias rr /rotate right
/alias rl /rotate left

Then, you can do things like:

/mf 5
/rr 45

Good point. This is a trick more often for the merchants, but can be used by anyone, particularly tailors and armorsmiths. If you drop a piece of clothing or a pice of armor in your house/shop, it will stand there as if it's being worn by a person. Since you can drop multiple pieces in one spot, you can drop a whole wardrobe while standing still and you'll have the equivalent of a manequin showing off the clothes and armor you make, except you can't see the person figure wearing them. Sort of an "invisible man" manequin.

One word of warning to buyers and sellers - it's possible to lose a small bed behind a wall because of the unusual placement position. I always try to warn customers who buy in person cos it's not fun beating on the wall trying to get it back!
