Right now we have all kinds of "structures", ranging from personal harvesters up through PA Halls and Cantinas. Each one has a distinct "footprint" (e.g., 2x3). There appear to be multiple rules regarding the "terrain leveling" ability of that structure (e.g., you can place a medium house on uneven ground that you can't place a harvester on). Each structure not only has a number of lots, but it may have other restrictions (e.g., must be a Master Doc to put up a medical center).
How many times have I been out surveying or working with a city planner and said "gosh, I wonder if that .... will fit here?" But because I didn't have the lots, or I wasn't a master dancer, or I hadn't built a Theatre yet, I couldn't even check it out.
I want a tool that I can choose the structure from a radial menu that will let me go into the "placement mode" with the appropriate footprint and terrain rules of the selected structure. That's it - just let me check out the placement.

I agree wholeheartedly, as a city planner of Tranquil City on Lok...I always need 1 lot open, and carry around my personal mineral harvestor to measure out placements and stuff heh...would be ALOT easier just having a bloody option just to check footprints and stuff!

or how about being able to doctor the land more if you are a master arch or something? like when you place stuff, master arch's should be able to level the land more?

I think this is a great idea. You'd think it would be simple to implement, too.
