my little brother offered me 22k of radioactive ore the other day, thinking I might like to use it for power .....
whe I asked him why he wasn't using it - he didn't realise it was power, and not knowing any better, had harvested it using a personal mineral extractor because it looked interesting :-)
Should that be possible ?
I thought you could only get power from wind, solar or fusion installations ......

The radioactive in it`s mineral form is not usable as energy. For that purpose it needs to be mined with a fusion power generator.
I think though that some crafting professions do need radioactives in mineral form.

Radioactive can be harvested with mineral harvesters or fusions. Fusions are more efficient (BER 14 and lower cost to operate since you don't have to put power in).
Regardless of how the radioactive gets harvested, it can be used for power as well as crafting. Weaponsmiths, combat medics, bio-engineers, and chefs all have schematics that call for radioactive explicitly and it can be used in other schematics that calls for inorganic or mineral.

Is that so? Man, I was not aware of that. Almost a year playing and still there's much to learn.
Thanks for the clarification and my apologies to the original poster if I messed things up

Yes, you can pull up radioactive using either a mineral harvester or a fusion generator. You will get *exactly* the same stuff, to be used as energy or for crafting (Combat Medics, I think).
The only difference is the economics. A fusion generator take 1500 credits a day to run and typically is BER14. A mineral harvester requires both credits and power to run, so ends up costing more to pull up the radioactive.
Depending on the power market on your server, it may or may not be good for you to harvest power. If you do, then it is very low cost to you. However, you could use that same lot to pull up minerals with a higher market value. Do the math for yourself - I haven't gathered my own power for 6 months, either though I have a BER16 fusion.
That being said, as someone builds up their harvester fleet from smalls to mediums and on to heavies, *if* you are harvesting your own power, there is probably a 1-2 week period in that upgrade cycle where you can stop using wind and put a BER10 mineral harvester down on radioactive and come out ahead. The reason is that a fusion is a "heavy" and has a higher capital expense initially. So once you start building / buying BER10 mediums you could devote 1-2 of them to power until you can build / buy a fusion.
In the long run, a fusion generator is the most economical though.
