just wondering if you can build your house anywhere on a planet.

No, you can only build a house (or factory, or harvester, or PA Hall) in a buildable zone.

First of all, you have to be at least 1000m away from the nearest city (this varies from city to city). Then you need fairly level ground, not too near water or an existing spawn. Even then, the spot may not be buildable. About the only way to tell is to double-click the deed in your inventory. You'll get a message saying "Building is not permitted here" if you're in a no build zone.

It can take a while to find just the right spot, but keep trying. If you don't mind the company, look for places where other players have put down harvesters, since those are obviously buildable zones.
