Thread: Would like some architect input: medium houses
This is a cross-post from the general discussions board. Basically, I think the medium generic house is too small compared to planet-specificmedium houses. The one that comes to mind is the Naboo medium.

Am I wrong on this? Maybe it's not that the generic mediums are too small, but that the naboo mediums are too big? How big are the other planet-specific medium and large houses? Do any of the medium or large generic floor plans even come close to the size of the planet-specific medium and large floor plans? Do you think it's bad that they cost as much or more in terms of resources but are smaller is size?
Thanks for your comments.
I think there is some balance
Naboo only 1 kind of medium and 1 kind of large, plus the style 2 small is the smallest of them all. I think things are great, why mess with it.
Right now, I should be in the market for a new house. If you were to look at my showroom (I'm a tailor, operating out of a Medium Generic Planet House style 2), you'd be appalled. It's starting to look like a maiden aunt's attic. And thanks to a very lucky resource find and a half dozen hours of Survey missions, I have plenty of money saved up to buy a medium house, and could scrape up the cash to buy a large house if I wanted it badly enough.
And I can't make myself do it. I live on Rori. Generic houses are the only things we've got.
Why I Won't Buy a Generic Planet Medium House:
- It's too small. Basically, all I get for my money is one more showroom.
- It's too small. No basement, no second floor, which means there goes decorating even one room as a workroom/living quarters. OK, I could keep my small or buy a style 1 small to be a separate house. I don't want to, but I could.
- It's too small. At two lots, it has the same 150 item furniture limit that both generic small houses do. As a Tailor, I could conceivably want to display up to 300 items. Plus furniture. Plus my crafting station. Plus my vendors. Plus any backpacks on the wall used as storage.
The very least thing they could do for Medium Generic Planet Houses is add a basement and expand it to at least 3, preferably four lots so we can display/use the full 250 items.
Why I Won't Buy a Generic Planet Large House style 2:
- The floorplan is beautiful. It's perfect for a house. But it's a maze. There's no way I could use the various rooms for dedicated showrooms, because I absolutely guarantee that my customers would never find the right room.
If I ever close the shop altogether and decide to "retire," to buy a mansion and just take tailoring jobs by appointment (which could very easily happen when I hit master, as bad as they're about to screw us merchants, and boy couldn't I find other things to do with those useless Merchant points), then I could easily see using a Generic Planet large House style 2 to retire to and to entertain in.
Or, if I were going to give up on having a showroom and just shove everything into one Standard Terminal in the foyer, I could do that. But if what I want is a space to lay out samples of clothing so that people can see them up close, full size, and in 3D, then forget it.
Why I Won't Buy a Generic Planet Large House:
- The most important reason is that I've never even seen one. Roughly once a week, maybe more, I poll this web site and all of the architects I know personally, and all of my most valuable contacts, asking them if they know anybody with a Generic Planet Large House set up. Without exception so far, every generic planet large house I've seen was a style 2. This makes it rather difficult for me to tell whether or not the style 1 will work for me. That being said...
- On a webpage (swgcraft? I forget which),I have seen what purported to be a floorplan of a Generic Planet Large House (style 1). Because of the overlay of two (or more?) floors on top of each other, it's hard to visualize how the space inside works. But from the looks of it, to get to any of the large rooms, you have to follow the proverbial "maze of twisty passages, all alike." Again, so much for using them as showrooms.
Generic Planet houses suck warm sick through a short, fat straw. The white interiorwalls are pitifully ugly; it's like living in a White Castle or an old Steak 'n' Shake. The straight-down overhead lighting leaves everybody looking like a black construction paper cutout of themselves, and all you can try to do is hack around it with tiki torches that give off flickering orange light and fill the room with smoke.
When I compare Generic Planet medium houses to Naboo or Tattooine Medium Houses, it makes me want to cry. It almost makes me want to move to Tattooine, if only because Tattooinian houses are the only ones I've seen so far that don't have screwed up interior lighting. Too bad I'm just flatly not willing to live on Tattooine. (*sigh*)
We have both styles of large generic planet house in our city if you would like to roll up a character and look around. Tarquinas server on the moon Talus, -1000, 500. Just look for the Drunken Badger vendors on the map ![]()
Actually, we have one of every kind of generic building (all four smalls, both mediums, both larges, and a PA) in town. Maybe I should take screenshots and floorplans and host them...
Thanks for the comments, Brad.
Maybe I'll buy a large generic style 1 and send you some screen shots. ![]()
