hello all, i have a few questions regarding factories and please keep in mind i know nothing about them whatsoever. i'm a bounty hunter with limited medical experience and i was thinking of making one to create stimpacks for myself. what all will i need? do i feed it constant organics/inorganics? how much power and cr does it take to run one? other than a schematic, what do i need to make the packs? can i even use it w/ my profession? again, i'm totally clueless so any positive help is much appreciated.

I would strongly suggest not to take the route of becoming self sufficient in regards to crafting your own stimpacks as you will soon see in my explanation of handling a medical factory. Because of the fact you've sunk alot of your skill points into your profession, being able to craft high quality stimpacks will be rather.. limited. Also, higher level stimpacks, require multiple components. And when you create a stimpack, your required to use identical components in your schematics. Although you might not be hurting for herbivore meat or whatever sort of organics/inorganics you might need to make mediocre stimpacks, since you have pretty above average combat skills. So I guess it could feasibly work out for you. But with that caveat, this is what you basically need to know to work your own factory:

You need to know first the difference between a similar item and an identical item. Knowing this will become clear later on. In Geometry, when draw two triangles, both of different sizes, they are considered similar triangles. When they are drawn exactly the same height, and angle, they are considered identical triangles. The same goes with crafting. When you hand-craft two cdef pistols, they will both be cdef pistols, but they will not be identical. They will be similar. One will maybe slightly faster or the other slightly more hard hitting. The only way to achieve identical crafted components is to use a factory.

You need a food/chem factory to craft medical goods. With this factory, you can automate your medical crafting capabilities instead of manually crafting your stimpacks.

You also need a schematic. A schematic is basically a plan that tells the appropriate factory how to craft a particular thing. You can acquire a schematic by going near a public crafting station, opening your food/chem crafting kit, and crafting your stim. Your then given an option to experiment, create a prototype, or make a schematic.

If you experiment, your given the chance to raise the quality of that particular component

If you create a prototype, your kit will fashion the component.

If you create a schematic, your kit will create an item (placed in your datapad) that will instruct the appropriate factory on how to craft a particular thing, in your case a stimpack.

Once you have a schematic, you go to your factory and enter in the schematic. You then enter in the ingredients that are listed in the schematic. You then turn on the factory, and it will craft the items. The time it takes to completion varies according to how complex the item is. Something with Complexity 15, will take alot longer to build than say, Complexity 5.

The thing you must note about schematics, is that you when you enter in the ingredients into the factory according to the schematic, you must use identical ingredients. For example, a stimpack A just takes a 8 organics and 8 inorganics. With a schematic for a stimpack A, you can't use any old ingredient, you have to use the ingredients laid out by the schematic itself. The same goes with stimpack B's. Stimpack B's require 3 subcomponents. A liquid suspension component, and two other crafted components. You can't use any old hand crafted subcomponent, you have to use the one that was outlined in the schematic. (remember two cdef pistols hand crafted by the same person are similar, not identical) But wait, how do we get the subcomponent for the schematic if we can't craft two identical components? We use a factory.

So, if I were to factory make stimpack B's I would first make a schematic for the difference subcomponents, i.e liquid suspension. And then pump them out by a factory. After that, I would make a schematic for a stimpack B using the identical components that just got pumped out of the factory. I would then enter the schematic for the stimpack B into the factory, along with the identical subcomponents (i.e liquid suspension) and the other things as required of the schematic, and then start the manufacturing.

As a final note, the costs of a factory are 1440 cr a day. Power is 1200 a day. Although the thing to note about power, is that a factory only uses power when it is in the process of manufacturing. However the maintenance is always taken no matter if in use or not.

Hope this answers your question.
