Thread: Is being an Architect currently viable?
There is room for the architect like me selling at a higher price. I'm not having trouble moving my inventory right now. In fact my trouble is that I don't have enough resources to support the business I can generate.
I am having to turn people down because I don't have resources to make things. Why on earth would I want to lower my prices? I am seriously thinking about raising them!
You are trying to put your competitors out of business. It isn't working. It can't work! You simply haven't got the clout it takes.
From where I am sitting it looks like there are a few tough periods in the progression to MA. Just starting is one (if they don't know enough to find a MA and sell Mods and Walls). And you can probably succeed in running some of those off.
But to run me off? You simply cannot dominate the market enough. Like I say - I may actually raise prices.
(I know you aren't on my server but there are lowballers on Corbantis too.)
You are not completly wrong....
I will never dominate the market ( and that is a good thing ). But what I see is a declining archetect market, fewer and fewer people buying houses and extractors and such. So, how do I sucueed in business in a declining market. I need to make sure that there are lots of people that know I sell for less.
People talk, I know they do. I know people have traveled from other planets to do business specifically with me because I sell for less.
That is exactly what I need to survive in a declining market. I believe the tolerance for the high profit margins we charge will diminish, even the prices I charge now. I dont need to drive you out of business, all I need are enough people on my server that know I sell for less and direct others to me that I stay in business when the market declines to 25% of what it is right now.
My goal is a long running business that is profitable, not all the money I can make this month.
I am not running you down for your practices, I only tease the people that run me down. My goal is not the same as thiers, I dont plan to ever give up archetect, I am looking down the road for a year.
Until the expansion comes out..... then who knows.... maybe spacecraft, maybe not.
But there is no doubt at all that I will be an Urban Planner.
Mad,
If you can't keep up on orders sub contract parts. Or look for a resource contractor set amount/price per week.
Dayln, man, I love how you talk of high profit margins, but yet are a lowball architect. I'm just sitting here laughing. Tolerance for high profit margins? What skill are you again?
So on Naritus, Dalyn's server, btw, 2 -3 creds per resource is considered a high profit margin? Man, and here I thought I had it bad on Starsider clinging to 4 creds a resource with all the weaponsmiths selling at 10-100creds/resource. So pretty soon you're going to drop your prices.....to what? 1 cred a resource? You are what is called a crafting griefer, your own comrade architects on your server call you that, I read the posts.Your concept of how to become a successful architect is to be Walmart. Way to go, that's really fun. Does anyone else here hate Walmart because now we have nowhere else to go? Ya, good marketing plan, but it's not making you any friends, and I guess I have to remind you thatthis is an MMORPG, notreal life. i give fellow architectgreat spots for ore I find, fusion, because I want them to have fun too. You're not like that, are you?
I'd be perfectly happy with letting you play how you want to except you're continuing what the guild architects started, the tradition of selling foralmost a loss. You can never ever hold the market on your server, you'll never be big enough and you obviously don't plan to be. You just want to ruin the prices of your fellow architects, your wonderful PvP business. I cannot wait til the business on your server dries up, then you'll be out running missions and asking your friends for harvester upkeep. Just wait, sooner or later it happens. Ask anyone here. It's one of the phases every architect goes through.

All in all I think our profesion is one of the best for a business minded person.
Ok Dayln let us go on a mind exercise. Let's say that launch went slightly different and that the miner profession was never dropped. Now in order to use personal extractors you need novice miner. In order to use mediums you need some other skill in miner (half way through ideally) and to use heavies you needed master miner. Let us also assume that resource prices are the same as they are now, anywhere from 3-5 cpu. Now since mining is a seperate profession not everyone would pick it up. So now we can argue that the majority ofarchitects would have to buy resources. All right would you still price your items at 2-3 cpu? And if you did would you buy your resources or pick up miner?
Now I'm going to guess you would pick up miner and still sell cheap. This leads to the whole point of the mind exercise. In the 'real world' this is illegal. It is known as a vertical trust in the US. Almost all capitalistic nations have laws against trusts, monopolies, oligopolies, and cartels. The reason being is because it is bad for an economy. It hurts small businesses which are the cornerstone of all free market economies.
So please don't say what you are doing is good business.
Sorry bud, I just don't believe it. You have such a poor grasp of the architect profession and it's problems. Your logic is very flawed.
You've got to be kidding me, here, again, you show YOU are one of the major problems for architects. Do you have any clue how many resources Urban Planner buildings are going to take? We're talking like a guild hall at the minimum. Did anyone else see that quoted, I think it was in a Dev post, will have to go look.
Our resource requirments will go way up, solo architects won't be able to compete, if you crit fail one of these you're out the resources for days, and there will be rather few Urban Planners in the game. All of that makes the profession that should cost the absolute most in the game to buy items from. And you want to start out at 3 creds per resource. Do you also realize that the structures for UP will be bought by TOWNS not mostly single characters? Towns will be able to afford much higher prices, and should expect to pay for items that will not even most liklely require an upkeep!!!
I hope the architects on whatever server you are on flay you alive. What server was that again? What? You don't want people to annoy you since you're the problem? Imagine that, you annoy the rest of us, it's only fair.
There's just something about spending an entire 3 day weekend selling unit after unit at my prices knowing that he is out there working twice as hard to make next to nothing in return, knowing that while I have customers tipping me (yes, tipping an architect!) for my fantastic service, his customers are waiting in a week long backlog and thinking that the price I offered them doesn't sound so bad considering my backlog rarely exceeds an hour. Yes, he may just be a troll and while thats amusing enough, I'm still pulling for him to be real.
Tued the Master Builder
If you want to play a miner, then architect is the role for you.
If you want to play someone who is valued for their ability to build and repair structures which is needed by many people who are willing to pay you well for your services, then no, it's not a viable alternative.
It does not matter to me what you believe, you have such a poor grasp of business that I am not surprised you are complaining about what seems to be the most profitable class.
I know what a resrouce costs ( for me it is just over .5 cr per unit )
I know what my overhead is
I know what my profit margin is.
Im doing very well, in fact I am currently supporting my partners that are grinding and not really pulling thier weight yet. And doing this by selling for less than you ( I assume ) do. The key for me is inventory, I dont have any.
What I make sells right now, as often as not it is already sold.
