Thread: Aren't you guys worried that you are force to experiment?
Someone not being able to put together an order for 150k resources for you in minutes impacts the rest of us hardly at all. It impacts you, and others like you, who are for some reason still buying your stuff.
For those of us that use our own lots, and maybe a few lots from friends, this will not change anything at all. I almost always place my harvesters in clusters. 8 heavies mins, 1 med gas, 1 fusion, and I have a handful of medium mins and a solar that i slap down if i need something that pops up and my other harvies are busy. i think i have around 6-700k of assorted ore and metal lying around.
I don't know about you, but very seldom do I NOT check my harvesters every 2 days. More often than not, I just take a 1/2 hour and do my runs once a day. That way, I'm not screwed by the shifts, cause I didn't check for a week, and I am making sure that my harvester status is still ok. It doesn't take that much time if you are running a reasonable amount of stuff. And when you have a stockpile of stuff, it also is nice that you don't necessarily need to move with the shift. I had like 460k ore, so when ore vanished from the planet, I mined 86% alum instead. guess what? 3 days later, ore was back. a little under what i'd like, at 48%, but with resources in the bank, i didn't need to worry about moving them 200m to the "prime" 54% spot. Just isn't worth it.
Anyways, my point is: this won't automatically throw the economic world into upheaval. It will throw YOUR economic world into upheaval, and probably that of your supplier. Me? I won't notice a thing, except that sometimes i'll be better off trashing a poorly experimented item than selling it. Most of the Architects on my server are not PA supported. The PA guys are too busy making stuff for the PA...most of us choose to work for ourselves down here in Moenia, and most of us mine our own stuff, because we realize that at the prices we can get for our materials, it makes a lot more sense to mine ourselves than to buy on the bazaar and sell for the same price we paid for the stuff.
This will admittedly be more of a pain for people like you than people like me....but i think there are more of us than you. Not that that's good or bad either way, but the economy as a whole will be less affected than you think.

DW-Acer,
I do pull a TON of resources.
Right now, I have a cluster of 7 mediums and 2 heavies pulling ore as hard as they can go. But, I don't mine my own metals. Never have, and probably never will. The amount of metals needed versus the amount of ore needed...I mean it's only 1/4 of what we need. The amount of metals is so small that I see no reason to mine it. I burn through all of the ore I mine (plus whatever I buy from my PA, Plus whatever I get in trade, plus whatever I buy) in NO TIME.
I have two accounts on my server. On my lots are...
7 Medium Minerals
2 Heavy Minerals
1 Fusion Generator
2 Structure Factories
3 Equip Factories (for my WSing)
1 Chem Factory (for my PA members)
1 Medium Naboo House
That's all my 20 lots. I use my Medium house as my shop/showroom. But, since I wanna use it as a showroom, I cannot clutter it up with both my advance factory run crates and items, my arch supplies as well as all of my WS supplies. So, I also have a Large Naboo House sitting on 6 lots of one of my PA Members (who is also a good irl friend).
So, I'm on 26 lots, pumping on a 50% ore deposit as hard as I can go with 7 mediums and 2 heavies, and runnin factories into the ground every single day to get everything done and ready for both WSing and Arch. I just do not have everything I need to even keep up with all the ore I need. These trades I'm getting for heavies in exchange for a good chunk of ore + a good amount of credits is eventually gonna end. So, the more ore i can pull right now the better.
I am using all of my lots the best I can (w/out going to all heavies which still won't solve my material shortage problems). So, I don't have the necessary items to pull metals too. And on any given day I can easily burn through 10's of thousands of units of metals. So, the only choice I have is to buy them.
So, changing extractors in the way they are doing is going to HUGELY affect how quickly I can create structures.

Hmmm... you're right, I hate decay more than I hate experimentation...
I'm all for doing something to make the game more fun... but yep, that doesn't get rid of people in our profession. To be honest... I don't want anyone to have to quit the profession. If they quit they should do it because they want to do something new, not because the professions enjoyment has been stripped from it.
Now, that aside. I actually enjoy being an architect. I enjoy the work I do and the structures (whether they are click click craft items or multiple piece displays like fish tanks or whatever) that I create.
I will say that adding this in at this point doesn't affect a lot of architects... many people don't make harvesters as it is for various reasons. I make and sell a few, but to be honest, my market is mostly med/large houses and furniture (with large displays thrown in for good measure).
To answer your question, how can they do both of those 2 things? well, yeah, experimentation does it... i don't dispute it. I dispute whether these are the only options.
Adding in things like powerups, GCW items, color options for furniture and/or houses. These are ways to make the profession last. Architects are viable now so we're not trying to fix a profession. We're looking for ways to make it better or to last farther down the road. We disagree with the way to do this.
Oh, and by the way, I saw where you changed your mind on house decay. Have you ever tried moving to a new location? Make houses or furniture decay and the multi piece structures I spend hours creating and have started making a nice little living on, go away as well. Why should I have to replace my house? If I move, ok, thats on me.... but if i stay in the same place? No reason for it except to give an architect some work and somehow I don't see that making the rest of the community happy.
Acer... criminy, you're in Moenia too? lol
I knew we had a lot of Architects around down here, but thought that was funny to see.
Ropock is right. My prediction is that we will NOT see higher prices for NICE extractors. We'll only get our base price for high end extractors. Everything else will go for less. Why is that? Simple, we only cater to a very very very small portion of the SWG crowd. I'm sure that there are quite a few crafters out there that would be willing to make daily runs versus spending an extra 50K over the base price on a 2.5 day heavy harvester. Plus, since we only cater to such a small crowd, the demand won't grow that much higher. And even if it does, it'll be for about 2 months and then we'll be right back where we are.
I have to admit that, in the end, exp might just be a nice addition to the arch profession. But, I have never been an advocate of changing anything about arch. If everything was left just the way it is now, a balance would eventually come. And that's the way I was hoping it would happen.
There are enough combat classes on each server to support a LARGE number of WS's and AS's. There are only enough crafters on each server to support a handful of architects...and that's the way it always will be.
