Let's This is a fun example. Say this would happen, and anyone would hear about it, they both would get enormous fines for doing something that's illegal in most countries

So how do you explain that away *grin*

Umm... whats the illegal bit?
Zen was not talking about price fixing. Just a discussion between companies in the same business.

Yes. Unfortunately, if 2 companies get together to 'talk about things', any and all changes in prices, etc afterwards will get them confronted with the same issue 'Those talks were about price fixing!'.

So the talking itself isn't illegal, and probably not even *about* anything illegal, but they will get fined all the same.

Which is why these sort of things only happen in very public places, in which case nothing much is talked about anyway.

Mad.

Ummm... no. The laws against collusion (price fixing) doesn't work that way.

At least not in Western countries.

And boy did this thread get derailed. Trying to compare real-life economic dynamics to a game economy doesn't work.Period.

Yes it was a very good example of the complete and totally futile pricing debate.

It had almost all the good elements of a pointless pricing debate:

Someone made an accusation of gouging... check

Someone suggested an arbitrary cpu based pricing system... check

Someone brought up Walmart ... check

Someone made a comparison to real world economics... check

Someone said that a pricing practice would be illegal in the real world... check

Very old school architect forum guys. /cheer

Okay you all are really going overboard with flaming me, saying that I'm judgmental or labeling my competitors as either undercutters or gougers. You're taking things way out of proportion. And trying to draw a parallel between rare weapons and loots and run-of-the-mill architect goods is like trying to compare a Chevy to a an F-15 fighter. People charge ridiculous loot prices because the loot is rare and they can ask any amount they want and people are willing to pay it.Goods that even novice architects can make are a very different situation.

Iknow a LOT of people that prefer to shop around rather than take any old price out of convenience, especially new players that don't have a lot of money. And what you charge for small houses on your server is your business, but they regularly go for 7-10k on my server, and I rarely see them over that amount. So stop jumping to conclusions before you judge me for "judging" others.

Why? Who is setting these so-called standards on whatthe price should be?

The point wasn't whether or not an item is rare or if it can be made by a Master or not. As used those as an example of how pricing is determined. I've seen AV-21 Powerplants for 1.5M (I bought one for that price) - few weeks later, I saw 2 of them sell for 3.5M on the Trade forums. Was he gouging? Did the people who bought feel they were gouged or happy that they got what they wanted.

Pricing is determined what they value it to be. To say "I heard of horror stories of paying 20K for a small house" was an inflammatory statement. Accusing those that don't agree with your pricing strategyas 'gougers' was an inflammatory statement.

Oh, and you really thought the responses were a flame? Sheesh. If I truly meant to flame, the wording would have been much different. I may have been strong in my wording, but it wasn't a flame.

Here it is, the great secret of what is the correct price for your architect goods.

Screw everybody,

Undercutting - Oh we all hate it

Higher prices - Oooh, look at the gouger,

In the middle - Oh look, he can't make up his mind whether he should undercut or gouge.

The fact is it does not matter one jot, not an iota, not one single solitary smidgen of significance what you choose to charge for your wares.

If you price at ANY level, there will ALWAYS be somebody who

a) sells cheaper (undercuts)

b) sells higher (gouges)

c) sells less (underachieves)

d) sells more (optimises)

So just forget it all, sell at what makes you happy !

Trust me, I have set prices at all different levels during my career, at the ned of the day I can honestly say that I have made just as much money selling high as I have selling low, I have sold heavy harvesters at 120k and at 180k, mediums at 50k and at 85k, but I have ALWAYS sold them. So just set a price that you feel comforatble with and screw everybody else. I can promise you that if you are on my server and sell at half the price of my harvs, well sorry but, it will have no affect on my sales. If you sell at double my prices well, I will still sell the same. Match my price and I still sell the same tomorrow as I did yesterday.

I am happy with my prices, you just need to be happy with yours.
