Thread: Urban Planner may not be a new profession after all... (from dev chat)
"I think making the city buildings should require a little more concentration and expertise. "
well said Veraphim
No one at all is concerned that SOE doesn't really have a plan yet?
No matter how they implement the Urban Planner, I think (based on past experience, watching them 'develop' things for over a year) one thing is pretty safe: it'll be half-baked, and a large disappointment to many.

You are so so so right. I can't believe it's not set in stone yet.
For gosh sake, let's be a little creative here. There are so many cool things they could do to nicely fill out an urban planner tree. We just need to think. And, if you make Urban Planner truly useful, somewhere along the line, the mere dabblers will drop out.
Here are a few of my ideas that I believe we should be forwarding:
1) A city should be required to have an Urban Planner. There should be some tasks that Urban Planners must do just to maintain a city. Bigger cities should require a Master Urban Planner. Even bigger cities should require more than one Urban Planner.
2) Urban Planners should have the capability of dictating placement of structures. They should be able to mandate the movement of structures.
3) Number 2 opens up the potential for abuse. Therefore, city planners (Urban Planner class) should either be elected or appointed by politicians (who are themselves elected).
4) As many of us have said before, Architects should be making defensive structures for the GCW. Urban Planners should organize their placement.
All of this is, of course, off the cuff. Some of it invites the concept of corruption and bribes and the like. Heck, maybe bribes of politicians and city planners should be a fact of life. Heck, will this lead to the need for a law enforcement and a judicial line? *shrugs* The point is that Urban Planners need to be able to do more than construct Cantinas or, as has been pointed out, it will be a dead and pointless thing.
The Devs have already said that only Mayors will be able to place the structures that Urban Planners build.
I agree with your statement though and think that Urban Planner should have the power to pick up and move (contents and all) ANY structure within the city limits.
architects make stuff Dayin... most towns, villages, cities... have a city planner that determines zoning... decides what can and can't be built... where it can... approves permits... things like that...
I know you were kidding around, but technically... an urban planner would have the ability to do all these things although the devs have already said, i believe, that they won't have private cities til later on so that eliminates the possibility of zoning permits... hehe. having an elected urban planner would be great, would make you have to earn the spot just like the mayor does and be a part of the city you help build... i think it would be fun myself <shrug>
Putting these schematics into Architect would rock!
Stick them in the Construction Branch, make it useful.
I would have to disagree with this Idea. While I like the idea of not losing Skill Points. I hate the idea of every architech being able to build city buildings. I was looking foward to sepating my self form other architechs. Its way to crowded already. Did you no see we are the #2 most master proffesion in the game. This means ever part time or alt architech in the game just gets to stay that. I was looking forward to having something new to advance to. Well I can hope they make urban planner its own tree still.
Here's a thought...
Make the Construction Boxes prerequisites for Municipal Building Schematics, but don't make them automatic grants. Make them available3 ways:
1) The City purchases the schematic, then it can sell or trade it to an architect, who can then use it to create that object.
2) Faction Architects can purchase with FP.
3) Mission Rewards.
However, if you have #2, you need to have at least one of the other 2 options so Archis not in the GCW have a fair shake.
AWESOME IDEA!! Seriously, I believe this should be the way it goes... then the city members can span out and find the resources needed to use the schematic, AND it takes the fear of critical failures out of shuttleports, hospitals, etc...
I respectfully disagree with you Gallbearer regarding UPs having the ability to move any existing structure within city limits. This could end up being very heavy handed in the wrong person's hand. Perhaps zoning areas would be more appropriate. the UP would get alarger scale map similar to what we see when we drop a building or harvestor. They would have the ability to drop zoning areas that would restrict development.
Personally I gave up all my combat professions already in hopes of the Urban Planner coming out.
I for one will be royally pissed off if every Tom and Huck gets to make all those items without giving something up.
I dont mind the grind, and would actually like to be recognized for the time it would take to achieve making such a higher goal.
Are they also planning on not going thru with other classes ultra elite professions or is this just another hidden architect nerf by saying we dont get our elite class?
Imagine if Commandos all the sudden all got their ultra elite profession skills without having to pay anything extra to get it? It would unbalance the game. I see the same happening here because there would be more architects since other people would recognize how easy it is to hit master commando and then at the same time be an urban planner!!!
There would be no economy since there are already so many architects as it is. At least making the urban planner an ultra elite profession would force people to make decisions as to whether or not to keep other skills instead of just letting them have them all.
