Thread: A Rant About Efficiency-Obsessed Architects

"Most master architects (and crafters in general), wouldn't benefit much from monetary compensation on a heavy harv, simply because money is not a concern to them (they're rich enough). "

I read this 4 times in disbelief. Obviously, things are good for crafters on Sunrunner.

BTW, I only make heavies. I wait & horde, run a schematic, horde some more etc until I have the components made, then run heavies in the factory. No guild support, just me. Took me a month to get to this point, but now that I am here I am less stressed, and I have a slight reputation for some of the best machines on my server. All of my machines are top of the line because using such a patient methodology, I only mine the finest materials. Easy it isn't, but I was forced into this by the stealth-nerf increase in CF rates.

I am one of those architects that refuses to make heavies at this point in time. It has nothing to do with resource efficiency. I've got enough resources stockpiled to make a crapload of heavy harvesters...

It has to do with my real life time. Heavies take walls. They take factory identical components in more than one slot. Heavies require AT LEAST 5 combines (wall schematic, generator schematic, storage schematic, harvesting mechanism schematic, final combine), and that's if you use all factory made components and discount that you probably had to make a schematic for the modules that go into those walls...

It's the same reason I don't build large houses for general sale and the same reason I don't typically take requests for high quality personal crafting stations --- it takes too much of my real time that I would rather use to do other things that are more fun.

(If I could make furniture in as many colors as a master tailor can make clothes, i might have a renewed interest in the "business" of this profession, but right now it's only fun when i'm working on the things I want to work on for my friends.)

I agree the customer is always right (from THEIR perspective anyways, in what they want). It's exactly why I took down my vendors, and only do architect work by request of members of my guild/city, and they know where to go for the best price if they want something I don't/won't make.

hello

Sorry I have to chime in!! I think that it is moronic to limit what you sell to people, we do not get rich from one visit we get rich from return customers, and word of mouth. I mean come on how many times have you heard "this person recommended you...", this is the reason we have such an awesome profesion and if one of my customers wants me to deliver a heavy harvester for 175k, naked while singing I'm an oscar miejer weiner, then I will do it. They pay for my house, harvesters, gobble, my turky aka spat and all of my krayt weapons. So suck it up and meet your customers needs. Thats my 2 creds.

thanx

Part of the problem is the huge resource drains player citiesare taking on some architects. You can get more cpu on mediums than heavies and given limited resources, you tend to only make the mediums. Most demand is for mediums as well. I suspect a month from now there will be an increase in heavies available as people try to draw in more sales in a medium harvester saturated market.

Good post, V.

I'd like to add to the rant, if I may.

You know, if I ask you if you'll build me a fusion, please answer yes or no. If the answer is no, do NOT tell me it's because experimentation is messed up on fusions. I know that experimentation is messed up on fusions - I'm asking you to build me one anyway. It's going to use the same amount of resources now as it will when they fix experimentation. You'll make them then, so make them NOW upon request.

Stop trying to protect me from myself. There's a fine line between watching out for your customers and forcing your efficencies on them.

If I tell you I understand the fusion will only be BER 13 as opposed to the 21 you think you can get if/when they fix the experimentation but still want the BER 13 anyway, make the **edit** thing and sell it to me.

Whew!

add in guild buddies/friends into the mix. mediums start to look a whole lot better. its 7 times easier to fill 50 lots with mediums then with heavies. not to mention to pump out a fleet that large of heavies will reqire a ton of resorces. after the lots are filled, then its posible to swich them out few at a time

I don’t get the point of this post?

Are you saying that just because someone can make they item, that they should because your willing to pay for it? I’m sure if your willing to pay for the item your going to find someone to buy from, it might take a little time and effort.

I can understand why some would refuse to make items, as for me its furniture I refuse to make. I will not fault any of the crafters who would refuse to craft an item. I’m sure in some fashion there some aspect of your chosen profession that you don’t like to do. Maybe it nothing useful to others, but I’m rather sure there is something.

As far as I can tell you seem to put a lot more time and energy in to complaining about a problem then looking for a solution. I’m sure you would love just open up a window and buy what ever your want, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes you have to spend a little time and effort looking for what you want.

You seem rather annoyed that some people tried to give you an explanation to why they wouldn’t make you an item on the spot, just as I’m annoyed at all the useless post and threads the people keep making on the Architect forum, pushing back all those useful threads back pages and pages and pages.

Volsted,

I also agree that the arch should make what his customers want. But if someone doesn't want to make them then just don't do any business with them.

I'm in the process of making 8 heavies for an order. I've already lost three to crit failures and have eaten the cost on those resources. This fear of failing a combine or on experimentation (which lowers the BER even if experimentating on storage) is what I think is behind some of the reluctance in making heavies. Like you said, you can make three mediums for the resource cost of a heavy. Plus you don't have to use factory parts. So a crit failure is less harmful.

But you should be able to find someone willing to make heavies. They will just be pricier. I know next time I'm going to raise my prices for a heavy to compensate for any crit failures. But I will still make them if ordered.

Large miners are 30% more efficient, but they cost 50% more power and money to maintain. Add in the limited number of lots and choose which is better for you.

Some architects don't want to bother and don't need the money. Others don't mind the work because they plan ahead and stock up and like the money.

I can get 120k for a heavy BER 13, and maybe 40k for a medium BER10. So, 3 times the money for 6 times the resources? Hmm.. not really worth the money. The only person I make heavies for are PA members and myself. And to be honest, asa master arch, I only have 3 heavies. The rest are mediums.

Now, if you offered me 200k for a heavy, I'd consider it, but no one has offered me that much yet.

I'm selling BER 13 Heavies on Kett for about 175K and can't keep up with the orders. That 175 accounts for the 1 in 4 failure rate I experience on final assembly. (Note: Not crit fail, but failure to experiment up to max)

The leftovers I either give away to guildies, or sell at 100K on my vendor. They also move like hotcakes.

As expensive as it is to do, I make 13BER's on a schematic.

They never fail

I just loose one when I have to switch resources to make a new schematic.
