The big problem is that I've picked everything up I can see and still can't destroy it. Status says there's one thing left - but heck if I can find it.

Yes, it needs to be empty or you will lose everything in it.
If you have some extra lots, you could get a deed for the same type of house (maybe a loan or soemthing from an architect), then place that so you have somewhere to move everything. Thenjust give back your old house deed to whoever you got the newdeed from.
