Freelancer has/had asteroid fields as bigger as the whole Jtl galaxy... i've hardly seen an asteroid bigger than the Nova courier.. this is not a JTL forum i know, but the space needs to be bigger... i don't care asteroid mining, sure they don't change harvies requirements so.. why to bother?

Hmm. I dunno... Did anyone here ever play Earth & Beyond? They had asteroid mining.

Two race classes were devoted to being asteroid miners. (With combat abilities too) Every space sector was filled with asteroid fields. Everything craftable needed the ores, crystals, etc. Dangerous space creatures, territorial Space pirates and warring aliens abounded in the fields. It was quite a challenge to mine the asteroids, finding the ones that had only the ores you wanted, and staying alive. Some asteroids, once tapped, would spawn deadly monsters. Crack the rock, pop a monster. We called them Jack-A-Roids. It was insta-death. Usually.

The various ships had to be mulit-functional for mining and combat. How you fitted out your ship could make or break your survival rate and mining abilities. Grouping with combatpilots and traders made a much more successful mining operation. It was efficient.

Anyway... all I am saying, is if they do this right... mining, in and of itself can be a very challenging and exciting pursuit. If they do this right, architects and shipwrights and pilots and others (?), will have an interdependency system for making and using ships, equipment, weapons, transport, whatever... dedicated to space mining.

I can understand why weapons and armor used on ships is unrelated to and not made by smiths who craft items for people to wear and use. But asteroid miners? Harvesting equipment is the same concept, on the ground or in space. It collects rocks, gas, etc. And perhaps there will be EVA? Armored spacesuits. With weapons. /drooooooool

Stop it. You're making me woozy. This could be too much fun.
