A dev replied on this topic awhile back. The reason they gave is that with smaller crate sizes you do have to consider what to keep and where to keep it. With large crates, someone could grab a huge number of items and not have to worry about restocking for a large amount of time.
I guess, I can kinda see the reasoning... nobody is gonna carry around 1000 powerups, but if they came 100 to a crate, it wouldn't be too hard.
On the other hand... on certain items it's a bit too much of an inconvenience. I would like to not only be able to add similar crates that have been split back together again (at least to the original size), but take similar items and then do a "crate run" on them that would put them all into a single (or even justnumerous bigger)crate(s). Maybe the extra time involved would help put thisinto consideration by the devs? I dunno....
