It was my understanding the Small was 500/day, Medium 800/day and Large somewhere around 1200/day.

Well, what happens if you forget to pay your mortgage and other bills in RL? And it's not 500, it's 384 per day. I don't find it's steep: one simple destory mission will have you covered for 4-5 days.
