In response to the orginal question, no, I don't think that the devs intended the schematics to be used in factory runs. I believe there was even a post from one of them that hinted at that shortly after the first schematic came out. I doubt they'll change it any time soon though, as I don't think there's currently any code in the game that would prevent a schematic from being used in a factory run, so they would have to write new code, and they already have far more code to write than they can handle.


In the meantime, I sell high. I rarely have stacks of more than 1500 hide availalble to me, so my factory run sizes are limited. I charge 50k per painting and have been selling them slowly but regularly. I have also noticed a jump in sales of the first painting since the second one came out. I have a feeling many architects on my server sold for lower prices and sold out. I'd rather be able to offer a wider selection for longer.
