I recently returned to the game and have started a new character with the intent of becoming a creature handler. I choose Wookie as my race for roleplaying reasons. Basically i have 2 questions:
First, I am concerned about my choice for a combat profession to back up CH. Again for RP reasons I would like to be a fencer and wield a Ryk blade in the defense of my beloved companion pets. Will I be handicapping myself with a weapon style that does primarily health damage? I would not be opposed to the idea of using a bowcaster and following the rifleman line if later it would be more effective, but I feel I would rather be up close and personal with my boon companions.
Not in the least. this actually is a good way to start out, because you can tank for your low level pet, just initiat combat and towards the end, call in your pet for full xp.
Second, I am an impatient man. I want to get a pet as soon as possible and can't wait till I get novice CH. Is it possible to get a pet before novice that can fight with me? I heard BE pets could be used, is that true? If so, what would you recommend for a wookie that will be useful through my climb up the scout line?
Easy, what you do is go out and kill, and keep harvesting till you get Exploration level II, this gives you the skill maskscent. Then you head to Dathomir, maskscent, hop on your swoop and ride from one outpost to the other, if something breaks your maskscent, get outta agro range, hop off, maskscent, hop back on. easy macro to do this.
/dismount;
/pause 1;
/maskscent;
/pause 1;
/mount speederbike swoop; [or what ever you vehicle is, have to use the full name that shows when it's targeted]
I look forward to any advice you might give. I do not play frequently as real life obligations to work and family prevent it, but if ever you are in need and on the Naritus server don't hesitate to call on my meager assistance.

find someone offering to trina scouting skills whos depserat efor ap and ofer to let tmh teach you both exploration and hunting lines if they hlep you get the xp 4 enraged rancor lairs are enough to get this xp if you harvest every corpse, a buiffed mele eelite master cna take down your 2 missions and tiher own 2 mission in aoubt 20-30mins if tihere all in the same dir so as long as you stay well bakc till harvest time you wont even need a buff and can hit novice ch in aoubt 30mins (plus travletime) they will get 280ap out of this (and if they need more jsut ofer to dorp skills for them to retrain you so they hit thiere mastery (youll also get some nice creds fomr th emision and if your offering tmhe all the ap they'll need they wont vne care aoubt that)(jut make sure its also agreed before hand that they will leave oyu with enough xp for novice ch)
also as for a pet try to find a ch whos a bit above you most opele on reaching novice try taming everything with (baby) after its name so its likely they might have the odd pet or 2 that are non-agro and non-ch level you coudl have

The non-ch BE pets are very contraversial avoid these... if you can go with a group to Doth and harvest enraged rancors you can get it pretty fast he is right, I helped someone do this on Saturday... although until I read this post I didn't know why they cared so much about scout skills.
Eventially you will unfortunatley realize that BE pets are your most trusted allies, but you will get much more enjoyment from wild tames.
Learn how to use specials... just incase there is a combat balance.

Thank you all for the advice, however upon reading your responses to my post I believe my questions may have been unclear. I was not looking for a shortcut up the scout tree. I fully intend to grind thru it doing normal hunting. I am under the impression that a non-Creature Handler may use certain pets, is this true? If it is true, I would like to begin using a pet as soon as possible and would be interested to learn what pets I can acquire at pre CH status. Having read through a few posts here i understand this may be a sore subject, yet I assure you I will be continuing thru the scout trees to novice creature handler as quickly as I can.
The method described of joining a high level group to go to Doth and harvest the corpses of their rancor kills does sound tempting. However, I am trying to get into the feel of this character and do not wish to powerlevel any of his skills. I am not saying that it isn't perfectly legitimate mind you, but I found in other games that I lost a sense of connection with my character when doing this type of thing. It's purely a personal preference.
Again I thank you for your earlier advice.

Doh! got it now.
Okay, here is a list of some decent non ch pets that I liked if you don't go be.
Carrion Spat (Corillia) can be mounted
Murra (Corillia)
Spiked Krevol (Naboo)
Minor Sludge Panther (Talus)
Bageraset (Corillia) can be mounted
Krahbu (Corillia)
Zucca Boar (Tatooine)
Canoid (Corillia)
Womp Rat (Tatooine)
Lesser Plains Bol (Dantooine) Can be mounted
Female Squall (Rori)
Bark Mite (Rori)
Female Forest Slice Hount (Corillia)
Fanned Rawl (Naboo)
Nuna (Naboo)
Jundland Eopie (Tatooine)
All of these are 900 HAM with the exception of the Eopie and Zucca Boar, those are 750 I believe, no resists and all non agressive.
hope that helps.

The carrion spat has 1100 HAM and is the toughest of the wild non-CH pets. You could get a BE level 10 pet with much better stats, I prefer using wild pets and destroyed my only BE pet a few months ago. You can use low level pets before making CH but you will not get any CH xp without having the novice CH skill.
I prefer ranged to melee as a compliment to CH as it gives the ability to solo anything you can pull from a mission terminal without needing buffs or armor, from the melee proffesions fencer would probably not be the best choice to go with CH as it is the most defensive and can't do heavy damage without a good loot made weapon which will be hard for a casual gamer to obtain.

I think the spat by far is the best all around Non-ch pet, also you may wanna look into getting a harvester droid, as a rifleman I love that I don't have to move from my position to harvest, not to mention my droid harvests like a ranger ( hmmm not looking at it, but you may have said that you are already a ranger now that i think about it) but anyway for me with Hunting 4 my droid totally out harvests me AND gives me more xp because of it.
Good Luck,

Bagerasets cannot be mounted, however, they are one of my favorite non-handler pets.
They have a ranged attack and intimidate (have an advanced handler teach it the special commands). Because of this they can make usefull support pets to a melee profession.

This is the best wild non-ch pet, once was the Rock Beetle. You will need a Ch to tame your baby spat.

Hey, I just needed to get some advice from my fellow smiths, so here's my problem:
2 and a half weeks ago I get a tell from a guy asking me to make a crapload of crates for him. Now being that I like making money I took the order, but I was a little hesitant. It was a huge order, 50 crates. And his reasons for wanting that many were kinda, strange. Anyways, I made up an invoice, recieved his downpayment, everything was fine. He said he would work on making the rest of the cash, between then and the two week delivery mark. That kinda worried me, but he assured me he had a couple million and it wouldn't take long to get the rest.
So, I finish everything a little early, and send him a mail telling him that his order is ready. His reply is that he needs a few more days to get the money. Well what the hell was he doing during those two weeks? Needless to say I'm very worried at this point, I had to put down four more factories to make this order on time and a bunch of cash buying some stuff I didn't have. So I guess the question is, is there any recourse if this guy tries to stiff me on the bill? Can the CSR's do anything (I think a better question would be, would they even give a crap)?
Thanks in advance

What are they crates of? I had a guy order a bunch of grenades, gave me the same story (will buy them as he has the money) and havne't seen him since. I just put them on my vendor and a couple guys in my guild going for master commando have been slowly buying them. It wasn't 50 crates (just 12) but I didn't feel a real loss. Though after hearing your story I will be more cautious about large orders! At least you got a deposit for some of it, that was a good thing to do.
