Architects!

I wanted to take a moment to pop in and talk about the persistence of Lamps and Candles. I know that everyone wants lamps and candles to be persistent and to have lightbulbs and wax as a "draggable" recharge, but there is some depth to the issue.

On one hand, one of the top correspondent items that I had forarchitects was, "Architects need more renewable income (product turnover or another source of income)". That renewable income is Lamps and Candles. If we make lamps and candles persistant, then its a one time rush to buy and then a small trickle of cash and that defeats the purpose.

We intend on adding the lightbulbs and wax as a renewable income, but thatwont happen for a bit because we need development and coding time to make that happen and architects really need a renewable income. I had spoken with the developer and I was just about to post an opinion poll when I spoke with Ood_Bnar. He has been working with the art team to dramatically lower the light level in houses so that the lamps have a stronger effect (in fact, you'd need lamps) and lamp light as it is, wouldnt blanch out the colors in houses.

If we can get that done, then we'll make lamps persistant (leaving candles with decay). Then, at a later date, we'll add the light bulbs and wax consumables. If there isn't enough time, then we will leave lamps and candles with decay until the low light feature is added. At some point after that, we'll add the light bulb and wax consumables.

I suppose also having an option for light COLOR and Brightness control would be too much?

Sounds good to me.. especially if you can lower the light in houses. Or give us a switch to turn the lights in our homes completely off as well.

I could see the color option on the lamps maybe, tinted lampshades, or even on the bulbs themselves whenever that comes about, but not on candles... i dunno, unless there was some screwy chemical additive (rare componant maybe?) that you could add in...

a renewable income possibility without messing up the system could be putting the bulbs and candlestick replacements in the architect tree... they are parts of furniture after all. just a thought...

Yeah those are tricky things. Maybe someday, but not right now.

The switch is something we will add at some point too - - its a tricky thing that needs developer time and programmer time.

Thanks Thunderheart.

Yep, works for me. I know torches sold pretty well. These new light sources should be good sellers.

Not sure how well the general public will like the decay feature though. BUt its not like it will be too expensive to buy new candles so I don't think there will be too much grumbling about it.

If you look at patch 7 we are getting some good attention. a) player garages b) new items in lights c) renewable income in light decay.

Will/do the items decay while on a vendor or backpack?

While I do like the ideas of having renewable income, I do worry about the changing of lighting in houses. There are some issues / answersto consider.

Some people choose to use houses for displays of their wares instead of tents or PA Halls. For example, I use a medium Naboo for displaying clothes. As it is now, its hard to see the colors of the clothes. Currently, housing has weird lighting that isn't balanced throughout the structure like the newer structures. How I wish I had the lighting like thenewer structures, like the City Hall, have. For that scenario, the lighting is perfect. You can see things in there easily without having to turn on personal lighting. Colors seem to show true.

On the otherhand, the lighting is perhaps a bit too bright formy dancer'sCantina. I would love to lower the lighting there and put in candles.

My suggestion is this: place a control in the Structure Control Terminal what will allow us a choice on light settings. This allows the players better choices for their particular scenario. It can be a simple control of Low, Medium, or High - a slider control isn't necessary.

People don't like being forced into doing things (recall the DE color customization failure for one example). Give us something new and we'll go for it. Choices are always a better answer. Otherwise, I predict people will adjust gamma correction instead.

I dont mean to sound ungreatful bit is that it in terms of renewable income?

I appreciate the lighting items, and it is something we asked for, but I am an architect, not a general item manufacturer. I dont think there are that many people interested in interior design. 95% of the houses I visit have nothing in them but randomly scattered things on the floor.

Are you still considering other options such as GCW structures that can be destroyed by gunfire?

back to the lighting. If you are making it so you need lamps to see inside a house comfortably, what happens to the personal light? would that be disabled inside structures, because if its too dark all they need to do is push ctrl + l to get a personal light and they can see perfectly again.

They don't in your inventory/backpack or while on a vendor.

They do decay while you are creating them (either manually or in a factory).

Some of your points:

  • Interior Design is hugely popular. I've seen lots of really amazing shops and houses. GarVa's Galactic Home Show, Thursday February 26th The Carousel and Fireplace in last week's homeshow really blew me away. (remember - - that person had no vertical movement yet....

  • GCW structures are Faction Point purchased and always will be...not from Architects.

  • People sure can choose to use their personal light if they wish...

So in order to see anything inside our houses we'll need to take yet more storage space up by furniture? *sigh* There's barely enough item storage to decoracte and to provide some storage.
