I had my VERY first absolute newbie geta slice yesterday. I had logged in really quick and he asks me if I can slice his gun...
him: hi can u slice my guns?
me: sure, how many do you have?
him: 1 gun
me: ok, that's 10K for the slice.
him: im sorry i dont have that much
me (trying to be reasonable) : ok, well maybe we can strike a deal...how much do you have?
him: 250 credits? can u plz slice for dmg?
me (sensing that he has more money than he's letting on, so I try something different) : well, the stuff I use to slice for damage costs a lot of credits, so if you want it to be random, I'll slice for 250c. If you want a damage slice, I'll have to charge you the full 10K.
him: oh...ok, how about 5K?
me (laughing pretty hard now) : ok, I'll take 5K, but there's only a 75% chance you'll get damage.
*guy trades me a CDEF pistol and 'a jar of spice'*
me: um,what is thisjar?
him:ithought itwas yours...a thug dropped it,didhe steal it fromu or something?
/sigh
So I slice his gun, praying the whole time, and lo and behold, damage. Got lucky I guess.
*trade back the CDEF*
him: wow! ur a great smuggler! thx!
*he tips me 15K and walks off*
/boggle

Are you gonna pick the guy who's been known to steal his cargo on occasion, the guy who's known to deliver the cargo and keep the payment, or the guy who's known to deliver both the cargo and the payment? You wouldn't pick the first two. Why? Because they might take your stuff. This is exactly why Jabba used Han so much. He was the best, didn't skim off the top. But, he did look out for his own neck, because he did drop that shipment, and even then hetried to pay Jabba back. This is the same thing. Smugglers may be dirty criminals who don't play fair, but they're the trustworthy sort. Thier livelyhood depends on it.
Why do I have to be Jabba...no no I see your point. I just wanted to test the waters a bit. I really don't make money off slicing now (mostly I'm flying) and do it as a favor for guildmates. Well actually that's to build up their trust, in hopes they hand me a bunch of items I really need, and then take one or two of them without there knowledge.
No but I guess I'm not trying to propose all smugs go bad, all smugs stay honest, just do whatever works for you. If pinching the contents off a container (clothing attachment +10 Posture Up, +10 Pistol Speed, +2 Feign Death) and substituting it for something else (CDEF Pistol) works for you then who am I to judge. Just don't get caught.
If you want to build up a reputation as a boy scout smug, build up a faithful all trusting client base, and lead a relatively boring existence. I mean besides the occasional "chuckle" we get from uninformed, greedy, or stupid non-smugs what else is there I say. Take what you can get, don't get caught doing it, and sell the goods before the CSR's get a hold of you.
I hope nobody takes me too seriously...I just had to say what I had to say. Play, enjoy, slice, steal (ahem no no did I say that) and roll around in a bathtub filled with all your riches (dare I say "Treasurebath").
/shrug guess i've just been lucky.

No one's ever complained about my prices for slicing. They're higher than most masters on my server, and I'm only slicing 4. (5K per weapon/armor, 3K per container)

I hate slicing containers. I might make them expensive too.
Unfortunately I have not had any dumb coustmers. Or well maby they are all on my ignore list. Who knows.
