Thread: A chuckle for the smuggler
Bootzislee: I understand you didn't stole him, just did a mistake, but by simply ignoring the guy and logging off (if I am reading your post right), you certainly gave HIM the impression that you stole the stuff. (and I think that's not good, we live by reputation after all) Should have owned up to it and maybe gave him something in compensation, then if he is not reasonable addignore and quit. If that's what you did and you just didn't typed it all, sorry. lol And that's just my opinion, of course.

Today, I was standing in Cnet and someone sent me a tell, asking if I could slice some containers for him. He was apparently looking for crystals in them.
I said sure, it'll cost 3K/container.
First, he gives me 5 containers, I slice them, nothing outstanding in them, he pays me.
Then he asks if I could slice some more. I agreed.
In the trade window he puts four containers, and a DE-10 schematic...
He says that I can have the schematic free. I slice the containers, and again, just junk. I say sorry, he says it's no prob and tips me another 12K.
Man, what a champ. My new best friend.

To be honest I have to say I have only love for smugglers especially those in the long haul.
With that said I really don't appreciate being told by other players what and what not to do. If I find a krayt pearl or something similar in a sliced container (I can wish can't I)...it's mine.
I am annoyed at those players (ahem) who are ready to flame a "dishonest" smug when they don't read through there whole post.
I had a thought that the reason why our prices suffer (slicing-wise) is all you do-gooders smugs who don't rip your customers off (well maybe occasionally). Now bear with me I'm not going for the flame war but to make a point.
Spices don't sell and just about what we have left is faction (yeah right) and slicing (at least for me that's a steady market). If the players can simply find any other "honest" smug who may/may not take their precious composite or RIS armor the value of our service goes down (in part). We get taken for granted like auto-docs.
The value of our services goes down when you can shop around and find it cheap. I think (yes it maybe warped) that if the player has it in the back of his mind that he may lose his armor/weapon then he may dig a little deeper to insure this doesn't happen. Okay there are CSR's but there really aren't any guarantees in this came.
Now my thread is to do nothing more than to make a point or two. The main thing is think for yourself and not let others dictate how you play your game. Sure this is a forum but how you play is up to you.

I carry CDEF pistols and other clothing just for this purpose to swap for valuable items.

What other Smugglers charge to slice is not my business, I agree. One could say as standard reply to slice request "I charge 50k per slice, take it or leave it" and I would keep silent. To conduct shady dealings is one thing. To use in game mechanics to rip off another player hurt every other Smugglers.
For example.... the Smuggler who helped me a lot when I started seemed very generous, gave me access to ressources and stuff. I was buying my clamps and precision knives and WUK from his vendor. It is only later, when I reached slicing IV and got a slicing contract with a local WS, that I realised he had a deal with that same WS, and part of the deal was that the WS was making WUK and AUK for him and was giving him free ressources to make clamps and precision laser knives. So that Master Smuggler was making tools using the free ressources and then was selling part of thoses on his vendor. The WS can complain that he is giving ressources to make tools for the slicing contract, not to sell them, but since that was never specified.... See, that's shady dealing. But that's not using a faulty game mechanic to rip off someone. My character is a criminal, a rogue, but the player is not.
You (generic you) can be a rogue I think, looking for occasions to come ahead in any deal, without becoming a griefer. Different playstyles I have no problem with, but that argument don't hold water I think in this case anymore than it would (extreme example, I agree) if a cloning center camper was telling me that killing someone as soon as they clone is a playstyle to him.
Nothing I said to Boot was intended at a flame, and nor is this post. Nor am I calling anyone here griefers. But I would call griefer a Smuggler who for example would be systematically keeping to himself the stuff entrusted to him for slicing. Granted, it would also be a Smuggler without any slicing contract fairly soon.

Yeah, the reason we have to be honest in our dealings is we are asking people, "Hey, give me your valuables. I promise I won't steal them." If they won't do that, then we don't make money slicing either, or ask for money up front for faction deals. No trust, no customers.
So I was standing around a starport, and I'm hawking a Life Day painting I...acquired. This wookiee gives me a tell.
"How much?"
"750k."
"I'll give you 10k."
Now honestly. Is that any way to haggle? Am I wearing a sign? Do I still have turnips sticking to me from the truck? Bannanas from the boat? I know what mywears are worth. Sigh.
I had my VERY first absolute newbie geta slice yesterday. I had logged in really quick and he asks me if I can slice his gun...
him: hi can u slice my guns?
me: sure, how many do you have?
him: 1 gun
me: ok, that's 10K for the slice.
him: im sorry i dont have that much
me (trying to be reasonable) : ok, well maybe we can strike a deal...how much do you have?
him: 250 credits? can u plz slice for dmg?
me (sensing that he has more money than he's letting on, so I try something different) : well, the stuff I use to slice for damage costs a lot of credits, so if you want it to be random, I'll slice for 250c. If you want a damage slice, I'll have to charge you the full 10K.
him: oh...ok, how about 5K?
me (laughing pretty hard now) : ok, I'll take 5K, but there's only a 75% chance you'll get damage.
*guy trades me a CDEF pistol and 'a jar of spice'*
me: um,what is thisjar?
him:ithought itwas yours...a thug dropped it,didhe steal it fromu or something?
/sigh
So I slice his gun, praying the whole time, and lo and behold, damage. Got lucky I guess.
*trade back the CDEF*
him: wow! ur a great smuggler! thx!
*he tips me 15K and walks off*
