With the upcoming ner... I mean revamps, will it be a good idea to take Ranger up as a support since defenses won't stack?

Ranger will be taking a hit soon too... Conceals will no longer work against NPCs. Pretty much all Ranger is good for is harvesting a few extra units and the kick-ass camps. Tracking is cool too. But other than that, there isn't much worth in it. A good support class would be Swordsman. I'm already a Master Swordsman and I plan on mastering Rifleman. Both classes are powerful and can attack the mind. You can a ranged class for long-distance stuff and a melee class for when (or "if" would be abetter word) they get close. Plus you get both Melee and Ranged Mitigation.

Heh.

Ranger in no way supports Riflenan. Ranger is an essentially useless class and on top of that, it's about to get nerfed big-time.

So no, not a good support class.

I dare say that I do not agree with what has been said here.

Ranger is quite a good support profession for a rifleman if playing itas search-and-destroy sniper.

First, you get the conceal ability which protects you against NPCs *and* minefields.

Second, you can track your opponents.

Last, camps like the high-tech field base will heal yourstat wounds (mind included) in the field.

Of course if you want an uberkilling machine go for swordsman for mind attacks...

In the former instance, you have a support template, in the later something good forsoloing but not necessarily for group PvP.

Conceal will no longer conceal you from NPC's... and ALL camps, including the lowly first scout camp, heal stat wounds.

A rifleman/ranger (like me, though won't be master Ranger, since I'm Master Marksman), is that because they want to hunt, ranger, for organics, as a living. It's probably not a good PvP combo at all, but then, I do not, and never intend to, PvP, so I don't care about that.

About the only current 'special' help a Ranger can give a party is to 'scent mask' via camoflage, the other party members who can't do it themselves. That can be useful, but not if your group is basically just overpowering everything in its path, through sheer firepower.

First, I didn't know about /conceal and I doubt this will change anyway as I've seen nowhere this will be the case. In fact /conceal being the advanced /maskcent should provide this ability along with the capability of masking others.

Second, camps have *variable* healing rates depending on their specific level and you can't compare a basic camp with the one you get at Frontiering IV much like you can't compare the firing speed of a novice rifleman with the one a master one gets.

Sorry, but Im afraid this is correct about the /conceal. The devs have already spoken that the ability to conceal against NPC's will be gone, with no word yet as to what will happen to the ranger profession. Check the ranger forums and you'll see whats been going on. As to the original question, I am a master ranger and aspiring rifleman; rifleman supports ranger, but ranger doesn't really support rifleman. Hate to say, but CH is a better use of sp as far as supporting rifleman.

/conceal has not worked against NPCs since the last patch. There was no warning, it just happened. The Devs claim that it was supposed to be like that, even though the write up of the skill states that it works against NPCs. Oh well.

I love being a Master Ranger, but it does not support anything other than CH. I will be dropping my ranger to further my rifle skills. I'll be keeping CH to shield me from harm on my way to master.

jumbofet is right. camo hasn't worked against NPC's for a while now. There is no way Ranger can get anymore nerfed then what is. the fact thatu people even think we can get nerfed is amusing. We have nothing to nerf.

Well...the high terrain negotiation really helps with crawl speed!

Of course, you can do about as good with the CM support line as the Ranger Wayfaring line...

I've been Rifle/Ranger while working up rifle, supplying organics to the guild, but really, I think when I master rifle I'll be dropping ranger as it's simply not worth the skill investment of mastering scout + ranger trees.

I was Master Ranger and Master Rifleman for a while. I gaveup Rangerto pursue the holo grind (smuggler). I dont miss it much at all. Just the tracking part. That was nice.

Master Ranger is pretty much worthless. The high-tech field base and tracking are probably the best features. My camo would break just as often as my maskscent, and after I was done with trapping I never threw one again.
