Thread: What does Rifleman mean to you?

Well problem is riflemen is too eclectic in SWG. They took a sniper, a rifleman and a heavy machine gunner and rolled them into one profession.

From RL + SWG contect I would have to say Riflemen are part sniper and part heavy machine gunner.

Why not infantry soldier you may ask. Well as one person put it, if we are the guys and girls holding the M4, who the hell are the carbinders. Don't forget the M4 is a Carbine Rifle.

So why a sniper? Thats a good question. Most riflemen consider themselves snipers. Unfortunatly the game mechanics and Dev's don't support snipers. They don't want 1 shot kills and we can't shoot past 64m which is a very poor representation of sniping. In PvP you can't really go prone 64m from the skimish and expect to live very long withone someone passing 15m where you can't fire anymore. It just does not work. So in PvP were forced to behave very "unsniperlike". The only time I have ever had the "feel" of a semi-sniper was a a newbie, with a slow rifle, from prone, useing /aim on Tuskans. For sniping to work they would absolutly have to introduce some sort of stealth into the game that would hide us from radar and give us slower fire with greater damage and about double our range to really act the part of snipers.

So why a heavy machine gunner? Well the T21 by SW definition is somewhat like the SAW or M-60 of today. A "light" machinegun, or man portable, squad support weapon. You can't even put a scope on a T21. I like to think of my T21 as a heavy sniper rifle, like most people like to think of thier T21's I think. I don't have much other choices. The laser rifle loosk like some sort of shotgun. The jawa looks like beat up, sawed off elephant gun. The tuskan rifle looks sniperish, but who the hell wants to hit lighter than a pistol with a rifle? To useing headshot3, the T21 does the best job of "playing the part" of a heavy sniper rifle. People commonly compare thier concept of it to the Barrett .50 or M82. For argument's sake there are light machnie guns with free floated barrels out there with fire controle selector switches for single and full auto, as well as scoped. I'm drawing a blank on the modle number but HK makes one. It should also be noted that the famous sniper Corlos Hathcock got many of his kills by rigging a scope to a browning .50 cal and scoring kills out past the 2 mile marker. Should also be noted that american snipers teams use the M82 to kill enemy tanks and light armor out past the 2 mile marker as well.

So what we really need is 3 more elite professions. A rifleman, who would be the grunt soldier. A heavy machine gunner who would be suppression and AOE. And the highly accurate, stealthy sniper.

Until that day, I'll want to be a sniper. But because of game machanics I'll be the mad woman with the "m-60" charging the enemy or supressing the enemy from 1/2 a poison throw away..heh.

the T-21 is not a light machine gun it is a repeating rifle. Much like the BAR of WWII or the M14 (both can fire in fully automatic mode and is still very much a rifle). We are not machine gunners for crying our loud

the laser rifle with scope and stock looks like a sniper rifle to me

this gives me a few ideas

.....

we would need to have custom weaponry built, with scopes and stocks, for the increased ranged to take effect...ofcourse that also increases hamcosts.

I'm not really asking for one-shot kill PvP gun. They have mechanics to reduce PvP damage and change certain specials in PvP to ensure it is ballanced. Although as stated before if someone is running around with 400HAM they will get one-shotted and not just by rifleman...

As for the T21 - This is supposted to be a heavy-armor-peircing gun. Ie. The sort of gun you'd go at a tank with. But at the moment the mind costs are WAY too high and the best T21 rifles damage cannot compete with even average Laser Rifles. That and there are actually no tanks to shoot at (AT-ST aside).

And regarding the H&K guns, I have done a little bit of homework and found-

Heckler & Koch G3 - Fully automatic rifle

Heckler & Koch PSG-1 - semi auto - and what a real rifle should look like
